Georgie James: A Throwback to 60s Pop-Rock

With Georgie James, two talented DC musicians have melded their styles into a bouncy, soulful whole.

Pop Band to Watch

Drummer and guitarist John Davis was in the postpunk outfit Q and Not U until last year; pianist Laura Burhenn has put out a few solo albums and hauled her keyboard around local clubs for years.

The ’60s-style pop-rock melodies capitalize on distinctive harmonizing—Da vis’s delicate upper range atop Burhenn’s low, smoky register. The result is reminiscent of such bands as Belle & Sebastian, the Shins, and the New Pornographers.

After releasing a seven-song demo, Georgie James (myspace.com/georgiejames) spent July on tour and finished an outstanding album this fall. Tentatively titled Hello, it could be out as early as spring.
