How would you describe your style?

Contemporary but not too trendy.

Who are your favorite designers?

Hugo Boss and Armani.

Do you have a fashion inspiration?

Pat Riley, who coaches the Miami Heat, has always been a great dresser. Bryant Gumbel and George Clooney also come to mind. None of them tries too hard to make a statement, but they’re also not too conservative. They wear simple, well-tailored clothes.

Any fashion disasters in your past?

Back in the day, I had a tan wide-wale corduroy suit. There’s a family portrait of me wearing that—I wish it were lost forever.

Fashion advice?

Stick to the basics—material is very important. And a good lightweight wool suit is mandatory in Washington.

Who do you think is the best-dressed person in Washington?

Vernon Jordan always looks impeccably tailored, whether he is wearing a suit or a golf shirt.
