Thursday, February 4: Musical genius Stephin Merritt and his band the Magnetic Fields perform at Lisner Auditorium in support of their latest record, Realism. Tickets ($35) can be purchased here. 8 PM.

It’s not Valentine’s Day yet, but you can set the mood early at Art & Romance at Phillips After 5, the Phillips Collection’s monthly event. At 5, the poet Shani Jamila reads love letters written by Georgia O’Keeffe, and violinist Lucan Klyne and DJ Adrian Loving provide background music. At 6 and 7, there are gallery talks about the love life of the collection’s founders, Duncan and Marjorie Phillips. Champagne and Brazilian tapas will be available.
Drink for a cause at Gordon Biersch’s free Brewer’s Select Tapping Party on Thursday from 6 to 8. The DC microbrewery will tap a wooden keg of its winter Helles Bock pale lager (pints cost $5.50) and pass around free appetizers. Proceeds go to Save the Children Haitian-relief fund.
Friday, February 5: Calling all wedding crashers: Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow are not only having an art opening but also exchanging vows—and everyone is invited. Their joint exhibit, “Till Death Do Us Part,” is a collection of quirky paintings that shows the couple’s interpretation of the meaning of marriage. The opening reception starts at 6:30, and the official ceremony begins at 7:30 at the Long View Gallery (1234 Ninth St., NW; 202-232-4788). Saturday, February 6: Happy Chinese New Year! The National Geographic Museum and P.F. Chang’s are hosting a family festival with table tennis, martial-arts demonstrations, and raffles. Starting at 11, 150 free tickets to the exhibit “Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor” will be distributed at the at museum’s M Street entrance. Noon to 3.
Remember the Lemonheads? If you listened to the radio at all in the ’90s, you probably remember such tunes as “It’s a Shame About Ray” and “Into Your Arms.” Well, Evan Dando, the former lead singer, has been doing the solo thing for a while now, and tonight he stops by Iota Club & Café. 9 PM; $20.

DC Coast is prepping men for Valentine’s Day with a special class on making a romantic dinner. Executive chef Brendan Cox and pastry chef JJ Minneola will teach participants how to make risotto with salt-roasted shrimp, lemon, and parsley; slow-cooked Scottish salmon with sweet-onion soubise, petite carrots, and caviar; and a layered chocolate mousse Parisienne with chocolate tuile and raspberry. Get a sugar rush at Fairfax’s Chocolate Lovers Festival, featuring chocolate tastings, a chocolate art exhibit, children’s activities, a craft show, and more. Some of the events have a fee. Head to the Dance Place on H Street, Northeast, for WAM!, a look at the early, more whimsical part of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s musical career. The Washington Ballet’s Studio Company and In Series opera singers will perform together to recreate and explore the musician’s childhood and young adulthood. The final performance is today at 2.
