The Smithsonian’s annual Folklife Festival draws nearly a million people to its array of events each year and showcases cultural traditions from around the world. Son de Madera, a music trio from the Son Jarocho movement originating in Veracruz, Mexico, performs at the Kennedy Center’s free Millennium Stage as part of the nearly two-week-long festival. 6 PM.
Wednesday, June 30
Pistolera—a New York-based group with a rich Latin sound that’s a perfect soundtrack for a night of dancing and fun—performs at Strathmore as part of the venue’s free weekly summer concert series. 7 PM.
Thursday, July 1
Each week, downtown DC’s Golden Triangle Business Improvement District is presenting a free early-evening concert in Farragut Square. This week, funk-and-soul group Cazhmiere rocks the park. Prizes from area businesses will be awarded to a few lucky concertgoers. 5:30 to 7:30.
Friday, July 2
Arrested Development fans know Maeby Funke as a teenage girl who lies her way into a job at a major movie studio. But long before that show, Christina Applegate starred in 1991’s Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, playing a teenager who fakes a résumé and lands a gig at a major fashion company. The movie will be shown outdoors at Rosslyn’s Gateway Park at 8.
Saturday, July 3
Luis Acosta and Miriam Londoño—Latin American artists from the Netherlands—fashion works of art from paper pulp. See their creations on display in the exhibit “The Language of Paper,” which closes today at the Target Gallery in Old Town Alexandria’s Torpedo Factory. 10 to 6.
Sunday, July 4
Heading to the Mall for fireworks this Fourth of July? Get there early and you can catch performances by Gladys Knight, David Archuleta, Reba McEntire, Darius Rucker, and the National Symphony Orchestra on the West Lawn of the US Capitol starting at 8. The fireworks begin at 9:10.
