Things to Do

Where & When: What to Do Tonight

A girl group, a cartoon artist, and mini-trees

READING: Cartoonist Ben Katchor, whose work regularly appears in the New Yorker, is the author and artist of a graphic novel, The Cardboard Valise. He’s discussing his cartoons, which are often surreal takes on urban life, and signing copies of the book at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. 7 PM; buy tickets ($15) at the museum’s Web site.

GARDENING: Head to the US Botanic Garden on your lunch break for a demonstration on how to grow your own bonsai tree. The practice of growing bonsai trees focuses on long-term growth and cultivation, plus they’re nice to look at. 1 PM; free.

MUSIC: Catch indie pop-rock band Sick of Sarah at Jammin’ Java. The girl group’s sound is often compared to that of Tegan and Sarah. 7:30; get tickets ($10) at the venue’s Web site or at the door ($13).
