Monday, January 9

BOOKS: In celebration of the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Shakespeare’s Sisters exhibit, the theater will host three award-winning female novelists—including Monique Truong, author of The Book of Salt and Bitter in the MouthAllegra Goodman of The Cookbook Collector; and Myla Goldberg, whose books include Bee Season and The False Friend. Tickets ($15) can be purchased through the theater’s Web site. 7:30 PM.

Tuesday, January 10

MUSIC: Electronica group Buraka Som Sistema are dropping by U Street Music Hall tonight. The Lisbon-based group fuses Euro-pop, African dance music, and party beats. You can listen to some of their songs here. Tickets ($15) can be purchased through the club’s Web site. 7 PM.

Wednesday, January 11

DRINKS: Show your support for the arts during the Washington Ballet’s Jeté Society Happy Hour at Mad Hatter. Guests can enjoy a variety of drink specials including $3 rail drinks and select beers, $5 house wines, and $5 appetizers. Proceeds will benefit the Washington School of Ballet’s Student Scholarship Fund. 6 to 9 PM.

Thursday, January 12

MUSIC: Saxophonist Bruce Swaim and his quartet are performing at Strathmore tonight. Jazz Times says the group “display a chemistry that comes out naturally. Each musician connects with the others on a plane that is intangible to the audience.” The concert will feature a mix of American jazz standards and new works. Tickets ($30) can be purchased through Strathmore’s Web site. 7:30 PM.
