See Sketches of the Couture Puppy Outfits Designed for the 2012 Fashion for Paws Event

Adorable or ridiculous? You tell us.

It’s not unusual for the dogs to steal the spotlight at Fashion for Paws, the annual charity soiree that raises funds for the Washington Humane Society with a runway show featuring locals and their canine companions.

This year, with the help of budding fashion designers from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, the organizers are taking things a step further. Instead of designing solely for the models, they’ve also opted to create couture for the pups.

“This year, by partnering with FIDM to design outfits for the dogs themselves, we feel we are able to better highlight the Washington Humane Society’s causes,” says Fashion for Paws executive director Tara de Nicolas.

FIDM has chosen five of its top design students to create ten custom pieces for the show, which takes place at the National Building Museum on April 14. Each designer will fashion one matching human-dog outfit; check out sketches of two of the outfit pairings below. The chosen pooches, owned by Fashion for Paws co-chairs, will make their runway debut alongside models from Washington’s THE Artist Agency at the beginning of the runway event.
