Great Bars 2013: Vermilion

It can be tough to score a stool in the little scarlet-hued
lounge behind one of Old Town’s most popular restaurants, but once you do,
prepare to be treated well. The staff creates signature mocktails for
pregnant women who are out with wine-drinking pals and warmly tends to
couples sharing bowls of rich pimiento dip or pork-fat-flavored boiled
Virginia peanuts. Insider tip: Wines are available by the half glass,
offering a chance to sample a few selections from the list of mostly
American and Old World wines, including a California Bordeaux blend
bottled exclusively for the restaurant—it’s $14 a glass. Open
daily.

Happy Hour: Weekdays from 4 to 7, fried-food faves—hushpuppies, risotto
fritters, “frickles” (crispy fried pickles)—cost $5 in the cushy lounge of
this intimate Old Town restaurant, as do selected wines and cocktails.
Draft beers—Yuengling, Sierra Nevada, Miller Lite—are $2.75.
