Healthy Recipe: Lemon-Orange Sports Drink

Replenish electrolytes in a natural and healthy way.

File this fact under things we hate to know: Sports drinks, while terrific for replacing electrolytes after a sweaty workout, are loaded with unnecessary sugars and food dyes. Fortunately, local running coach Kathy Pugh of DC EZ8 has a simple fix: her recipe for a DIY lemon-orange sports drink. The two citrus fruits provide natural sources of electrolytes and vitamin C, and the Himalayan pink salt (which can be found at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Costco) adds minerals including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron.

Serving size: 5

Ingredients
½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
4 cups filtered water
¼ teaspoon Himalayan pink salt (also try Celtic salt, or any salt that has some color)
¼ cup raw honey or natural sugar to taste

Directions
Whisk ingredients together and hydrate.
