Real Wedding: Megan and Joe

A rainy proposal led to a wedding day filled with handmade details and a custom gown.

Despite going to rival high schools within ten miles of each other in Virginia, Megan Lowers and Joe Scanlan didn’t meet until after college when they were introduced by mutual friends. “I thought Joe was cute, but not much fun because he was in the middle of studying for his CPA,” says Megan, a registered nurse. But as soon as Joe passed his last CPA exam, the couple found their groove.

When Joe, now a senior financial analyst, decided to propose a year and a half later, he chose their favorite Loudoun County vineyard as the setting to pop the question. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate, and a heavy downpour ruined Joe’s plans for a scenic outdoor proposal. They then set off for dinner at Joe’s parents’ house—where his family, unaware of the thwarted plans, expected to find the duo already betrothed. With the pressure on, in a spur-of-the-moment gesture, Joe pulled the car over on a country road on the way to the house. “He asked me to get out to look at something,” says Megan, “but then he got down on his knee, outside in the rain, and proposed!”

Fortunately, there was no rain at the couple’s fall wedding, which followed 18 months later at Murray Hill.
