Our first visit to General Store occurred on a recent Sunday evening. We were more than a little surprised to find that the Sunday evening menu had exactly 1 choice (with 1 possible add-on) - sort of an "our way or the highway" approach to dining. Please call ahead if you wish to dine here on a Sunday night lest you find that the "menu" features shellfish to which you're allergic!
We were very excited here in the neighborhood when the General Store restaurant was about to open.
I gave it a few months and then decided to try it out.
In this time when everyone is watch every penny, we "used" our "eat out" budget on the General Store. The store itself was clean and quaint.
We live 100 yards from the place and so we got it as take out.
I ordered the very hyped up Fried Chicken with greens.
The fried chicken was, wet, soggy and tasted like left overs that had been heated in the microwave. When my husband took a bite he had to immediately spit it out. It tasted like it had been fried in old oil and had a fishy aroma. We were pretty disappointed.
Maybe they are still trying to work out all the kinks.
The General Store is hard to find, but well worth the search. Fried chicken, mac-n.cheese (the yummerest), collard greens, chicken salad sandwich, the GS has it all. If you're looking for food that has no flavor or isn't well prepared, this isn't the place for you. Just ask the staff what's good and you can see them trying to contain their smile, Clark has an excellent menu and a great atmoshpere for you to enjoy it in, though the bird sounds or screeching monkeys aren't the greatest ambiance ever the cute homey dinig area makes up for it entirely.
General Store is over-hyped and the Washingtonian review did not accurately portray my dining experience there on 4/11/09. I enjoyed breakfast at Colorado Kit. several times. My dining friends and I thought it would be great to come back and try some of the much discussed fried chicken. By the time we found a time, the restaurant was closed. We waited for the chef, much admired by us, to open a new restaurant. With the arrival of Gen Store we were thrilled at the chance to try the chicken. In short, the chicken was served kind of warm and greasy, the greens were not edible, the macaroni and cheese was average. The atmosphere and service is clumsy and lacks structure. The location is also odd. I hope Clark can make this place work.
