Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday

Monday, Feb. 12: For some people, Valentine’s Day means chocolates and roses and the true love. For others, it’s all about bitterness. If you fall into the latter category, you might want to check out the literary styles of the F.W. Thomas reading series tonight at the Warehouse Theater (1017-1021 7th St. NW). For the past couple of weeks, the series has been soliciting contributions from readers about their breakup stories, hilarious and pathetic. Tonight the stories will be read. Embrace the bitterness and rejoice! $5. 7:30 pm.

Tuesday, Feb. 13: The Apples in Stereo concert at the Black Cat is just right for tonight. The indie band is sweet as candy and catchy for sure—but their melodic hooks and strong stage presence lift them above mere Valentine’s fare. $13. 8 pm.

Wednesday, Feb. 14: It’s the holiest of all romantic days. Have you seen our suggestions for what to do?

Today is significant for more than romance: It’s Frederick Douglass’s 189th birthday. A wreath-laying ceremony at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site (1411 W. St., SE) will be held to honor the former slave turned orator, abolitionist leader, and statesman, and to mark the grand reopening of his historic Anacostia home, Cedar Hill, which offers a majestic view of the nation’s capital. 10 a.m. Free. (202) 426-5961.

Thursday, Feb. 15: The popular local blog DCist brings its fifth “Unbuckled” concert series to the masses. Tonight it showcases its first out-of-town band, Pela, while also bringing local acts These United States and the DJ stylings of Georgie James to DC9 (1940 9th Street, NW). Doors open at 9 pm. $8.
