New and on the Way. . .

Gillian Clark makes a comeback, plus takeout pizza in DC and Peruvian/Chinese in Arlington.

By Kate Nerenberg    Published Saturday, February 28, 2009

District

Arisu (1734 Wisconsin Ave., NW; 202-333-8822). In a two-level townhouse, owner Chafe Lim, 45, serves a Korean menu full of his mother’s recipes.

Article One (400 New Jersey Ave., NW; 202-719-8478). Cooking in his fifth Hyatt Regency kitchen, chef Michael Barber will oversee a menu that includes heirloom tomatoes and sweet corn year-round.

Homemade Pizza Company (4857 Massachusetts Ave., NW; 202-966-1600). Owner Eric Fosse opened the 23rd branch of this bake-at-home pizza pickup—the only one outside the Midwest.

Momiji (505 H St., NW; 202-408-8110). Sushi with a twist: The “White House roll,” stuffed with tuna and lobster, is rolled in soybean paper instead of roasted nori.

Siroc (915 15th St., NW; 202-628-2220). At this soon-to-open dining room, chef Martin Lackovic, who worked at Galileo and I Matti, will add wild game—which he learned to cook during a two-year stint in South Africa—to his roster of hearty Italian fare.

Maryland

General Store and Post Office Tavern (6 Post Office Rd., Silver Spring; 301-562-8787). Fans of the late Colorado Kitchen can find comfort in Gillian Clark’s new project: a menu of Americana that includes crullers, fried chicken, and casseroles.

Pomegranate Café (1215 East-West Hwy., Silver Spring; 301-562-9400). Bowls of Korean bibim bap and an on-site sushi chef meet chicken-salad wraps and egg breakfast sandwiches at this Asian-fusion deli.

Satsuma (8003 Norfolk Ave., Bethesda; 301-652-1400). Try the yakiniku (Japanese barbecue) and cook your own meat on a tabletop grill, or choose from an unusual roster of Japanese dishes including sliced beef tongue and tendon tempura.

Virginia

Harry’s Tap Room (1100 S. Hayes St., Arlington; 703-416-7070). An abbreviated version of the menu at the Clarendon original, this one is short on items such as fried Virginia oysters, Belgian-style mussels, and roasted duck breast.

Pizzaiolo Cafe & Bar (3112 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria; 703-837-0666). Owner Larry Ponzi’s second Neapolitan place has the same thin-crust pizzas as its sister, Cafe Pizzaiolo, but almost double the number of pastas, wines, and beers.

Yaku (2001 N. 15th St., Arlington; 703-248-0844). Mauricio Fraga-Rosenfeld, the owner behind such Latin hot spots as Ceviche and Maté, opened this two-level lounge with “chifa” cooking, a fusion of Peruvian and Chinese cuisines.

This appeared in the March, 2009 issue of the Washingtonian.
