It seems that you have still not repented... I will continue to pray that this evil called science is gone from your school, and that you establish Christ NOW.

As one of the TJ counselors once explained when addressing the constant problem of teachers carelessness in losing student’s work and forgetting to record the correct grades (or not recording them at all and blaming the student)in the "best school of the nation," the school is not measured by the teachers performance, it is measured by students performance. So do not think for a second that the teachers are great--most of them are not!
It is the students who make it with high scores in national tests by the insane competition of talking test grades, GPA’s and SAT scores non stop for four years. All this to end up at schools that were not their first choice. Check the 2009 Class College Admissions and see how many made it where. You’ll be surprised!

Um, "Kazimierz" dude, you know "Satanists" don’t actually, like, worship Satan. I would know. (I mean yeah, there are a FEW who do, who I was able to convince by telling them I was God... lots of lolz there.)
Also, you’re right. You’re completely right. I waited until human technology had gotten really damn GOOD before attempting to seduce the humans into disbelieving the truth. Because that’s SO logical.

Many posters here contend that it is the nature of the school that allows these students to be so successful. These people have never spoken to the students at TJHSST. While the nature of the school is instrumental in their successes, this school is populated by the brightest, most driven, most stubbornly optimistic and clever people in Fairfax County high schools. They are, at bottom, the authors of their own achievements. That isn’t to say that highly intelligent, hard working students cannot be found at other schools. The certainly can be. But outside of a top-tier graduate program, you will not find anywhere (not the Ivy League, not MIT, not the White House, not Goldman Sachs) so strong a group of minds as you will in the average TJ classroom.

A major problem is that many people are delusional. You ask most people if they "value" education and they’ll tell you "yes, of course." But they "value" education the way a couch potato values a million dollars.
Schools like TJ require that a critical mass of students actually care about their education. That caring has to manifest itself in behavior and attitude beyond simply saying, "Yea, I care."
It’s not clear how much, if anything, building a robot has to do with preparing students for the SOLs. Other schools DO have the opportunity to build robots. Few students in those other schools avail themselves of the opportunity and most of those who do don’t seem to take the class very seriously. Of course, doing a robot is mandatory at TJ.
Posted by: TheFallibleFiend, Oct 05, 2009 08:18:04 AM
Why is it that only students at Thomas Jefferson have access to programs where they are taught in cohorts? Why can’t the other students learn the required SOL content by building robots? Why are the students in other schools not permitted to have twice a week club periods during the school day?
I don’t think the answer is that the students attending TJ are brighter or more smart or more driven. I don’t think that the teachers at TJ are necessarily better than my fellow teachers or myself. I think the answer is that TJ has been permitted to be innovative and exploratory... where the traditional public school does not have that privilege.
I don’t see "building robots" anywhere in the high school scope and sequence (even the extended, detailed one). So, if I want to have my students build robots in computer math, or physics, I have to shoehorn it in somewhere else.
If I want my students to debate the Code of Hammurabi or read books that line up with my history unit, it had better be in that scope & sequence or I have to find another place for it to fit.
THAT is the difference. And we know that schools like TJ work. Shouldn’t ALL students have the opportunity to see if this works for them?
(Hint: We already know that teaching material using an interactive, exploratory, research-based style with group work and project-based learning works for ALL kids. Its called Universal Design...)

WHY YOU SHOULD “THINK” ABOUT THIS SCHOOL
Thank you for your story, “Why You Should Hate This School” (Oct. 2009), as it creates an opportunity for open discussion: Why You Should ‘Think’ About This School. Is “America’s best high school” (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology) opening doors for a few or closing doors on many?
Why isn’t access to instruction equitable at TJHSST? The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) found in July 2009 that the Division, “particularly the School” did not either timely or appropriately provide for a disabled student (health, transportation and instruction). The OCR required reimbursement to the family, mandatory training on the Section 504 policies and procedures to staff and administrators at the School and other resolution agreements. However, the horrendous treatment of this health-impaired student by the administration should not be overlooked when we glimpse inside TJHSST. While absences of students due to sports and modeling assignments were tolerated and written about in local student newspapers, absences due to chronic illness were not tolerated by the administration. The student left TJHSST to be educationally, emotionally and physically safe.
Can we create a new vision for our schools? I see a new rating and a new cover story: “The Best Education in America” or “ First Class Technology Brings Children and Teachers Together for a First Class Education”. New technologies such as webcasting, online and such work every day for the State of Virginia, Fairfax County Public Schools and top universities. Why not use satellite classrooms and technology to provide science, technology and math instruction to more students, including “gifted” or TJ-type students? Isn’t it archaic for us to think of distance learning as simply busing students a long distance? The “TJ” administration already stated FCPS Online Biology and FCPS Online English are comparable to TJ freshman Biology and English. True distance learning is already in place at TJ via online university programs and FCPS. Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University and Brigham Young University have gifted online and distance learning programs for high school students, why not more in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.?
Why do we need a new building construction plan for a new TJHSST Governor’s school? Do we need a world-renowned architect to create a “brick and mortar” Governor’s school? A new Governor’s school could embrace the future by expanding the use of computer learning, distance learning and other technology. Use technology for education, provide “science and technology satellite classrooms” and integrate more advanced science and math education to capable (and those “tested” as non-capable) students throughout our region. Sorting children and giving so much, to so few, will not solve our educational math, science and tech needs. Are glossy covers and headlines for a few, and a false sense of pride for some, our best practices or results?
How much does busing for so few, so far away cost in time, educational dollars and road congestion?
What would happen if your school had a Partnership Fund and a professional fundraiser housed in the school? This is a top-notch public relations and moneymaking machine. Why not have your students and your teachers benefit from such a successful model?
Are the new FairGrades “more” fair at TJHSST than at other FCPS schools? Who won big in that decision ?
Is the all-day, instructional isolation of highly motivated, bright students grouped together in an intellectually non-diverse setting valuable in today’s world?
What is the social cost when children are educated within such an exclusive public school? Is it elite or elitist?
Let’s think about our children and current educational models. Let’s work toward Fair-Schools. Parents, teachers and students can encourage our elected officials and administrators to provide math, technology and science instruction to more students while still providing for our students who tested as our brightest. Ask our candidates, "What is your vision for the future of our Governor’s schools?" How will you use new technologies to bring math, science and technology instruction to more students? Is there a better model to create equitable access to education and resources? Do you have ideas for fewer layers of administrators and simple solutions so our money can get back to our teachers and students?
Thank you, Washingtonian magazine for your story. You have started a: “Why Should”. Why you should think about this school….and all our schools.

Envy and fear. Ignorance and depression. I am one of the original class members of TJ, way back when we were just starting out as guinea pigs. And guess what, I loved the opportunities and framework it provided for me. Yeah being smart and pushed all of my life caused other stressors for me to overcome. But I wouldn’t trade my experience at TJHSST for ANY HIGH School in the world. It blows most other high schools and probably many colleges out of the water. And for you who didn’t attend, find other things to think about. Peace out. Move thru the envy peoples, and into something new.

Much better to keep the TJ kids with the ones who need babysitting until they learn the true of lesson that true excellence requires mediocrity.
Posted by: TheFallibleFiend, Sep 29, 2009 05:28:02 PM
Let’s get real. Is this democracy?
Thomas Jefferson would roll over in his grade if he knew his name was associated with a school which siphons off the best and brightest students from the al across the region’s other schools, and offers them a better education than the rest of the county’s students.
If we are going to adopt a caste system at the high school level, then let’s do it right. I have a young son who’s a gifted athlete, so why doesn’t the county offer a school specializing in athletic performance? You know, like East Germany.

Most private schools are much better than TJ?
By what criteria?
Posted by: TheFallibleFiend, Sep 28, 2009 02:48:02 PM
Okay I’m only a freshman at TJ and i love it. We’re nerds but we’re loved.
We’re like other high schools! We have our homecoming, we have our prom, we have our cheerleaders, we have our football players, we have the cliques and we have the socially awkward people. We’re just like any other high school except for the fact that every single student at TJ is gifted and has worked their ass off to be where they are. And we took this opportunity to take advantage of our talents and interests and pursue them in depth.
And it really doesn’t matter to us what every other non tj person says because facts are facts: We are the #1 high school in America. so deal.
We know better than to let ignorant people trash our school. So honestly all of you non-tj people can agree with the headline of the Washingtonian, but its cuz you don’t understand, and you never will. tough luck.
GO colonials!!!

I agree entirely that this article has a stupid title. The "reasons you should hate this school" is an underhanded trick to get you to buy the magazine, and they should be very embarrassed for using it. However, i do not think (judging by this excerpt) that it makes TJ sound any better than it is. It gives the facts, and nothing more.
Please stop posting about religion, it really doesn’t have a place here.
As for people who think it is easier to get into colleges if you go to TJ, it’s NOT. If anything its harder, as some people have posted, but its not that much harder. The point is that if you get the same grades as people at TJ, and you have good extracurriculars, you have pretty much the same chance of getting into a good college. They do not give special attention to people who go to any school, otherwise private schools would be in their own league. TJ may be the "best" public school (the criteria for that title is skewed), but most private schools are much better.
If you read this entire post, I applaud your perseverance or your extreme amount of free time, whichever it may be.

People who know TJ is full of a bunch of nerds and let us be nerds

Seriously people, get a grip, I go to TJHSST and I think this article is ridiculous. It just makes us sound like we think we are better than everybody, and we are not, all we truely wanted was just a place to fit in and not be discriminated by those who feel that we are just calculators and dictionaries that don’t care if they are thrown around.

"It IS evil. Science, through its contradictions of the Bible, has turned so many people against Christ and to Satan. How could I permit the Devil to win?"
-Kazimierz Jaroszewicz
While this is true that science has a way of planting doubt in people’s hearts, especially at TJ, where kids like to believe they have control over their own lives, it is my belief that God is at the center of all things scientific. Also, God has been taking care of me and providing for me through science for over a year now- before I was even a believer, he used science to change my life for the better. You see, I am hearing impaired, and if it weren’t for technology, I would have never found this out. I would never have gotten the hearing aids I need, the aids which allow me to communicate and interact with people normally, in a way I hadn’t been able to since fifth grade. And, finally, God has put it on my heart that my calling is in adult stem cell research, in finding a way to cure hearing loss like my own in thousands of people. It is because of God that I am here, at TJ. I am here so that I will be prepared to carry out whatever plan He has for me.
Considering all that, I think you’d be wrong to call science evil. Science is part of the world that God created, so it is not science itself which is evil- it is man’s flawed nature. We are constantly looking for reasons to rebel against God, and the barely-understood nuances of His creation provide an easy excuse not to believe.
Posted by: Christian at TJ, Sep 26, 2009 07:35:32 PM
First of all, to Kazimierz Jaroszewicz--you are creating many more enemies than you are converted Christians with your threats and warnings. The only way to spread Christianity is to let people know the love of God. I am a Christian and also a TJ student. I understand the Bible in more broad approach--as I once heard, the Bible is God’s word with human fingerprints on it." I believe it is fully possible for the Bible and science to interact harmoniously. TJ has a thriving Fellowship of Christian Athletes club, and I would venture to say that most students are Christians. The people at TJ are far from Satanic; they are some of the "goodest" people I know.
As for the idea that TJ makes it harder for students from other schools to get in to top notch colleges--that is nothing other than a myth. Colleges have quotas, and with so many bright students from one school applying to top colleges, it’s much harder for them to get in than for students in other schools. It’s a proven fact. Just read Jay Matthew’s article in the Washington Post today.
For students posting inappropriate comments--please stop. You are earning yourself about as much respect as the people yelling at town halls over healthcare. As I have mentioned before, the people at TJ really are some of the most courteous and kind people I know. If you see some inappropriate comments from TJ students, please know that they are outliers from the vast majority of the TJ population.
If you are a non-TJ student, please hold back on your criticisms. You have no insight into what a terrific school Tj is unless you have previously attended it. While you may not appreciate hard work and the rewards that benefit from it, I and many other Jefferson students thrive on it. We work hard, and yes, we often do go without much sleep. But, believe it or not, most of us are here because we want to be, not because our parents are forcing them. To the Mr. Bruce: you would not even have a computer to write your comments on if it weren’t for the type of engineering minds who go to TJ. You call the people at TJ nerds--hate us if you wish, but I know many who take that as a wonderful complement. :) You don’t have to agree with us, but don’t go hating. Getting laid can get you so far, but finding the cure to cancer can get you a lot farther.
To Drew Lindsay--I have no qualms with your article. Thank your for spending your time to let people know about our school.
To the editor who picked the atrocious title: I agree completely with JHobz2010. "While you may be getting the business of TJ students and faculty, you’re method is still sleazy, unoriginal, and unintelligent, leaving you no better than The National Enquirer claiming to have found Bigfoot’s baby. " Brilliantly said. While your tactic may have worked to gain readers, you have stooped much lower than I ever would have expected from an honorable company. Please do not expect any further purchases of your magazine from me.
Tj is the best school I’ve ever attended, and I love it tremendously. If you think we’re a school that has top notch facilities, think again; the school is practically crumbling. But it’s the students and the spirit that sustain TJ and make it fantastic.
Posted by: Christian, TJstudent, and lifelover, Sep 26, 2009 07:21:26 PM
"Well, gotta go get some sleep. I’m glad I actually have a future and friends, unlike you despicable nerds of TJ who don’t know how to make friends, hit up on chicks, or get laid. You might be able to go to college, but what good is that when you can’t even be a social animal? You are all like beasts, indulging in your own little worlds of video games, computer codes, and cheap pornography. I’ll always remember that in 20 years, when I see some skinny bum with glasses and a tennis arm begging for change, I would say to him, "aww, you shouldn’t have gone to TJ! Why did you make that stupid mistake?"
Stupid nerds like TJ students have no place in our society. The only place they belong to is the computer code kitchen. Make me a program, nerds!"
I would just like to say that whoever wrote this is extremely dumb. It IS possible to go to TJ and be normal; all that science & tech crud aside, TJ is, first and foremost, a high school. We have our cheerleaders, our jocks, our band geeks, and our dorks. There ARE relationships, people DO go on dates, and trust me- there ARE some pretty cute guys at this school. ;) The only difference between TJ as a high school and any other school is that TJ students are, as a rule, accepting. You wouldn’t see one of us going around bashing people who are different from us, because we don’t live our lives with ourselves at the center. So, in that way, we are more "social animal"-istic than you will ever be.
Posted by: TJ student with social skills (not as rare as you might think.), Sep 26, 2009 07:13:16 PM
Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, if you really do hate science and technology, why do you have a computer? You should be living in a hut somewhere preaching to squirrels, you hypocrite. You can’t badmouth science and then use it for your convenience. Every time you post something on here you’re contradicting yourself.
On an unrelated note, if an omnicient and perfect god created us, and some of us turn out "wrong" how is that our fault? If he has the power to make us all happy, why not do it? If god created everything then every fault in man was placed by god. Isn’t it just as likely god is simply toying with us, that we’re here for his amusement?

First off, I hope everyone has figured out by now that the cover is not chosen by the journalist; it’s chosen by the newspaper editor, so we shouldn’t be criticizing the author. If you want someone’s house to egg, then find that guy.
If you are a current or former TJ student: please be mature when you comment! Personally, I am not extraordinarily happy with my decision to come to TJ because I feel the amount of time it takes away from our sleep and social lives isn’t worth the hassle. But nevertheless, I am a student of the number 1 high school in the country, and you don’t have to be a nerd to accept that ranking with a great deal of pride. Obviously, it hurts when people criticize you for being smart, successful, ambitious, hard-working... traits that are supposed to be glorified. But we don’t have to be affected by it. We know who we are, and we know that we are as human as any other high schoolers in the country. We play sports (and win state championships). We have soc-hops. We break the rules. We talk about football and sex and music and social events. And for haters who think beautiful girls don’t have brains, I have a really hot girlfriend, and she goes to TJ. We just happen to have 4.5 GPAs at the same time. And if you’re a smart kid, you will not feed Bruce crap about how ridiculous his comments have been. As future CEOs, doctors, lawyers, politicians... we should take this criticism and do... nothing!
We don’t have to defend ourselves. 10 years from now, when we’re buying beachfront houses and reeling in the dough, it’s all gonna be meaningless.
Just stop buying Washingtonian if you do... I have never even heard of it until yesterday, so it’s not as if they are a significant source of news anyways.

I found the article pretty positive. One thing that deserves to be mentioned is that TJ has a very strong religious community. I myself am a pretty devout Catholic, while at the same time believing things such as evolution, etc. It is possible-try looking at the Bible (you seem to be all hung up on Genesis) as a figurative message instead of just whats on the surface and you may come to be more accepting of beliefs that God often works through methods that we call science, and that studying them may be a good thing. At any rate, in my personal experience as a student and athlete here I’ve found I definitely have a social life (including still chillin with friends from other schools), the community to be a great thing, and not really much thats too different from any other high school. one thing i have noticed in greater amounts is trust between students and students, between teachers and students--and if you think more trust is a bad thing, I’d call that a problem. But hey, thats just me.
Posted by: Skeen, Sep 25, 2009 11:55:22 AM
Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, you’re an idiot.
The majority of TJ students are Christian, like I am. You are just being immature and stupid. Science is not Satanic, and if you had any amount of brain power, you’d realize that. I hope you get a life.
Posted by: 2012TJ, Sep 25, 2009 10:50:50 AM
TJ is a terrific school. You can only realize it once you’ve attended, and I mean gone there as a student for a year or two or more. Obviously if you’re not self-motivated to at least get a B then it’s not the place for you, but people manage to make things work. For one thing, teachers are willing to accommodate students having a tough time. The best students will finish their homework ridiculously fast and have free time left over. It’s all about what they find rewarding: they find getting good grades and getting a good job relatively more important than students at other US high schools, for whom socializing is the most important thing.
The facilities with senior research labs and computer labs are outstanding. The teachers are only the most qualified and the best around. There are the top tier students who take 5 APs a year with straight As, but also the ones who struggle to get straight Bs. Nevertheless all are smart and want to continue learning.
As a side note, I don’t subscribe to human evolution, but to evolution in general, I don’t see why not. Religious texts do not constitute concrete evidence; as good an argument can be made for one as another, to oversimplify. Of course I have my preferences, and others have theirs. I’ll sum it up with a great quote (guess where from): "And to you your religion, and to me mine."
Kazimierz, don’t mess this up by preaching Christianity here. There are over 5.5 billion non-Christians on the planet; less than 0.0000000005% of them go to TJ I’m guessing, and less than 0.00000005% have read this article. You have influenced 0.0000000000000000000000000% of those people with your comments; in fact, it’s more likely you’re driving them off.

TJ is a great place. My oldest did not get in, but was valedictorian at her HS. She was not entirely thrilled with her school, since cheating and vandalism, etc. were rampant there. My youngest is at TJ. Her teachers and classes are kicking the crap out of her, but I monitor her as discreetly and non-smotheringly as I can without pestering her (too much) and she is happier than she’s ever been.
I used to hire interns from TJ. They’re brilliant and on par with the better college upperclassmen in ability, and on par with better graduate students in their professionalism and maturity. If my employer would allow me, I’d hire more of them in a heartbeat.
Ideally one would like every school to benefit from the kind of environment that TJ has, but most schools are very different. While TJ has occasional problems with thefts and cheating, for example, it’s nothing like the scale at other schools. An important thing about TJ is that some critical mass of students actually WANT to be there, LIKE learning, and are willing to do their homework. You can bet your behind that the deans and presidents of every science & tech school in the U.S. are familiar with TJ (and its peer institutions). The big "secret" to academic success is having competent, enthusiastic teachers and students who WANT to learn. Enough of that.
Jaroszewicz, I suspect you are a poe and do not actually believe the silly stuff you are asserting. Evolution is good science, because it is supported by and explains the VAST preponderance of available physical evidence. TJ teaches evolution, because it is in the Virginia Standards of Learning - as well they should, since it is accepted as fact and theory by the majority of scientists and nearly every major science organization in the US supports it to include, NSF, AAAS, the national academies of science and many others. In short, the people who have actually studied the theory and understand it, accept it, while those with a comic book understanding of the history, philosophy, laws, theories, facts, and methods of science reject it. That is no mere coincidence. However, I suspect you know this and are a poe.

Now, students and parents alike will not only read this issue, but discuss and argue it, as exemplified in the superfluous comments posted in the past few hours.
Overall, the small portion of the article seems to have done its job also. It showcased Jefferson in a way that most people don’t understand. It showed the uniqueness of TJ. Hopefully, the full article will also show the rich culture of TJ.

For God’s sake, did anyone stop to think that this is a reputable news website and this thread is not your forum at somethingawful or 4chan? I’m all about incivility via anonymity on the internet, but there are many, MANY other places for that. I would advise those of you posting less-than-civilly under real names to reconsider their words and those using pseudonyms to take their business elsewhere.
I am aware that, as most of the previous comments encouraging civility, this will likely be ignored. But there’s no harm in trying.
TJ students need to represent their school on and off campus. Think before you post.

The Thomas Jefferson High School for Satanism and Temptation will one day, be judged by Christ. You must be ready! Please abandon the variant of Satanism you call science, and turn to the Bible only. We must stomp on the ideas of evolution, the Big Bang, and the idea of an old Earth to follow God to the fullest.

I posted this on the other page, but after seeing these comments this page needs it even more. Seriously, STOP with the rude comments towards the writer or any commenter, because all it does is lower hundreds of others’ opinions of you. If we can keep this _somewhat_ intellectual then maybe the Washingtonian wouldn’t have to drop to such tactics to sell papers.
My post from the other page:
First off, to those who comment: Please don’t write some hateful comment based solely on reading other comments and the title. Also, I think we can stop with the random shouts of "You lie!" and the like. Oh, and they’re not deleting your post unless you curse, so stop posting it twice.
Secondly, to those who make a point when they comment: Good for you. Thank you for trying to bring some thinking into this discussion. I really don’t want to sound pretentious but these comments are more interesting when they have some substance to them and not just mocking the paper or students.
Thirdly, to the Washingtonian: After having heard about the article from an open mind (reading the full thing tomorrow), I agree that it does not play down the talent at TJ or call everyone workaholics. That still does not excuse the fact, however, that you chose a title just to catch an eye. We may not like it, but many (if not, most) people will only see the cover of this magazine on a shelf or rack rather than picking it up and reading it. While you may be getting the business of TJ students and faculty, you’re method is still sleazy, unoriginal, and unintelligent, leaving you no better than The National Enquirer claiming to have found Bigfoot’s baby.
Lastly, to Drew Lindsay: Thank you for coming to the school and talking with the students and faculty before writing. I think you did a fine job and have no reason to be criticized because that sleazeball of a boss wanted to sell magazines under false pretenses.
.... I’m done.

"Religion originally existed to explain things that people were incapable of understanding - People used to believe that a Sun God carried the Sun through the sky every day. They believed that winter was caused by the depression of the Goddess of Nature... People use religion to explain what they are incapable of explaining."
Of course their explanation was false - their explanation was not based on the Bible. But the Bible, that is another matter, for it actually contains truths. It is just that Darwin started the Satanic anti-Genesis movement with his Origin of Species, and many followed him. They thought they were following the truth, while in fact they were only following Satan’s trails.
"Religion springs from ignorance to the way the world and the universe actually work. "
Not the Christian religion.

Well, gotta go get some sleep.
Make me a program, nerds!

Hey Fellow TJ Students,
I’d just like to point out that while we are all somewhat offended about the title of the article, maybe the best way to do this is not to hassle the writer of the article.
After all, it’s possible that his editor wrote the headline - and, even if he did write that misguided title, let’s not give him and the other readers of this site reason to hate us by acting immature and posting offensive statements about/(purportedly by) Mr. Michaelson.

As a TJ student I’m not thrilled with the way we’ve been composing ourselves on this thread. There are a lot of people out there who don’t understand who we are or the type of community we have, but feeding the trolls and using this type of language isn’t exactly helping our rep.
TJ has provided me with an environment through which I can excel academically, physically, and socially. It’s not for everyone, but it is definitely a good model for other schools.

Hi everyone,
I’m sorry that there has been so many off-topic and frankly, just disgusting, posts put up here, but I want to invite everyone who has never actually been to TJ to refrain from judgments. If you are interested in understanding what TJ is like you really have to come visit.
Of course there are people who do nothing but pour over their calc textbooks, but there are also people who love to dance, party and have a great time. There are kids who are anti-social and kids who are so outgoing you can’t shut them up. In many ways its not so different from other high schools. Sure we all have to take the highway (or in my case, multiple highways) to get to school, we don’t have bells, and we have a ton of work, but that doesn’t mean we are all freaks or aliens or something.
So before any of you decide to write us off as a bunch of geeks with no social lives and can’t function outside a schoolroom, I dare you to come and actually talk to some TJ students. There is an amazing variety of people there, and not all of them are science nerds. Lots of kids go there and are better at art, music, or the humanities. So instead of just taking the easy route and labeling us all as super geeks in your head, maybe come visit our deteriorating building and meet us.
So if you are uninterested in the truth, i encourage you to continue making false statements and assertions. Otherwise I encourage you to question the stereotypes.
And guys, could we please cut out all the ridiculous sexual stuff? If you are looking for porn then I am sure there are better places then the Washingtonian magazine online.

So what if the title is poorly written. We got more good coverage within the content of the and no one’s opinion of us is going to be truly shaken. When US News named us #1 for the first time, we were excited, but we carried on pretty much immediately. This shouldn’t be different. My advice is to get off this thread, stop feeding the trolls, and just relax.

You Satan-worshipping students of Thomas Jefferson High School for Satanism and Temptation do not see the danger of your school... Your school is forcing every kind of science, even the false ones, down your throat in order to indoctrinate you to the ranks of the Devil. You must get out of the evil institution NOW and turn to Christ! Fight evolution, fight the Big Bang idea, fight the old Earth idea, all for Christ.
Posted by: Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, Sep 24, 2009 07:42:23 PM
Kazimierz - I personally do not believe in God or Satan or really any other divine being. The closest I come is the ancient Roman/Greek gods/goddesses. However, I respect the religious opinions of others...to an extent. I am assuming that you know the foundation of the United States and the idea that our founding fathers laid down: separation of church and state. As TJ is a public school, there must be a separation of church and state. At TJ, there are students of all denominations and clubs for them - Christian, Muslim, or other. Your continuous bashing of the school because of our "satanic" teachings of evolution in biology class is reflective of your narrow view of religion.
Bruce - TJ is like any other public high school, with a few exceptions. One of them is that to attend, students had to pass an exam and submit an application (which is like a smaller version of the college application). Another is that most of our courses are taught at a college level - that means the amount of homework TJ students get will be more than other base schools. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have any social life. I’d like to remind you that there are younger readers of the Washingtonian and I ask you to please keep your language G rated.
Malcom X - TJ does not discriminate against any race, religion, gender, ethnicity, marital status, etc. There are African-Americans attending our school, there are Hispanics attending our school, there are Asians and Caucasians. Yes, there may be a lot of Asians at TJ, but keep in mind that, culturally, Asians put a lot of emphasis on education thus leading to "harder working students" who work to get to where they are.
I apologize for the length of this comment, however I felt that I must respond to the blatant disregard for TJ students.
I also ask all TJ students to please remember that their comments are reflective of themselves and the school and to please conduct themselves in a proper manner.
Thank you.

2 Stereotypes destroyed by this act of pure humanity.
But, what is humanity? Is it not what pours that which is loved into our blood and discards the waste produced? Should we not embrace each other, rather than fighting to assert ourselves in a world where colored people and non-colored people can coexist, symbiotically giving each other hope? Hope. Tj is a good school for education, considering the challenging classes. Bruce Michaelson makes a point, though he clearly is exaggerating. The social life in the school is lacking. I am certain most kids have never done drugs or alcohol. They are mostly worried about getting an A. That is no way to live your life. They are just going to end part of the capitalist system, blinded by false ideologies. Kids there are naive. Doesn’t mean they are bad people. Its just what the US does to you. Messes you up badly. Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, you represent the worst of humankind: ultra-conservatism and religious fundamentalism. Get your head out of the sand. This is the 21st century, not the 16th!

Bruce Michaelson and Malcolm X, join me! Together we will stand opposed to this sanctuary of evil, armed with Bibles and God’s love, and bring Christ to the hearts of these misled students. Also, we can wear coordinated costumes. I think it’ll look really cool.

You are right that there are Christian clubs, but how could those "Christian" clubs even call themselves Christians when they are submitting to the demonic doctrine of evolution? A "Christian" that believes in evolution is no Christian, but a Satanist in the making.

From what I see, TJ is a pressurizing force for all Asian students. But, compared to the rest of the world, Tj’s education is pretty good. If many schools in the United States follow TJ as an example, I am sure that the United States wouldn’t look so dumb to other countries.

This school is not bad because it is satanic, but because it does not allow people of the colored race to attend it. This is a prime example of segregation in public schools that continues to this very day. While the white and asian boys and girls of the area reap the fruits of TJHSST, black students are few and far between. America has a very serious problem. Not only does America have a very serious problem, but our people have a very serious problem. America’s problem is us. We’re her problem. The only reason she has a problem is she doesn’t want us here.

Bruce and Kaz, you two are idiots who are struggling to find lame excuses to criticize our school. How in the world are there people as shallow as you two??
Vivaek, I totally agree. Only the title is wrong, that doesn’t mean the whole article is derogatory about TJ.

I am a Christian who attends TJ, and our student-led Christian organization is almost 100 students strong. I believe that Jesus Christ died to save me from my sins, but I respect that not everyone shares my beliefs. Please think before you accuse and generalize about a place where you have most likely never been or been a part of.

Okay, so we have more freedom than the typical high school student, because we deserve it. It’s like a college. You don’t see kids smoking pot, or doing drugs on the grounds. You don’t see girls and boys all over each other like in some other schools. We are more mature, and just because of that, we have to be called satanic? It’s those with less maturity, that travel the ’satanic way’. Especially those who blame other who are more mature and more intellectual than themselves. We need mature and intellectual people to help those who are being treated like crap by people who are too busy attacking teenagers about being ’satanic’ just because they are more mature.

I’m not saying that all science is of Satan... Only some. As a school that embraces evolution, the Big Bang, amd the idea of an old Earth fully, Thomas Jefferson High School is being an outpost of Satan.

TJ PRIDE.
Title would not get you into TJ, however.
And excuse me, Ms. or Mr. Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, but we have thriving religious clubs and associations at our school. Just today, Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted 60 people to pray around the flagpole. We are learning science to help the people in your world and spread Love while doing it. If you believe that’s Satanic, you have some serious issues.
Posted by: tjpride, Sep 24, 2009 06:51:51 PM
Oh Bruce, you jokester. You’re confusing TJ students with yourself.
Posted by: lolz@bruce, Sep 24, 2009 06:51:19 PM
Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, I wonder why TJ is a PUBLIC school. And you have such a narrow view, because there just happens to be a lot of strong Christians who attend this school. Just because we’re taught the science that isn’t compatible with the Christian faith...doesn’t mean we’re all Satan worshipers. I’m Christian myself..ohmygosh! I must be a Satan worshiper because I learned evolution in biology!!!! :O
In all seriousness, the way you are bashing TJ is totally without evidence.

Curse you, Kazimierz Jaroszewicz! You’ve figured out our evil schemes! We tried to hide our Satanic tendencies by having a Fellowship of Christian Athletes and even a Creationist Club, but you’re too clever for us.
Posted by: L.J.C., Sep 24, 2009 06:48:33 PM
Correct me if i’m wrong but i think science was invented by jesus one night in his weekly jam seshs with socrates and a velociraptor. After some bare knuckel boxing and the saccrifice of a dolphin, Jesus turned to Socrates and crafted the mythological microscope, used in navigation for millions of years to come. This then evolved into pyramids which drew upon the powers of the stars through the flux capacitor to create SCIENCE!
Posted by: Matt Lycas, Sep 24, 2009 06:43:56 PM
It’s not rationality that is Satanic... Its embracing of evolution, which is rejection of Christ and the Bible, is what is Satanic. Evolution is a Satan-derived idea that nobody who is a believer in Christ should believe. Satan is the god of the world.

Guys, you are in no position is criticize TJ. You haven’t been to our school, you don’t know our curriculum, you don’t know what activities there are, and you don’t know what life is like here. Just remember that when you are posting, no one will like it if someone posts "YOU SUCK" about your school.

Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, I can tell you that I do not have TJ kids work for me. They are too smart and would figure out their work is for satanic purposes. I get mindless idiots with 1.0 GPAs to work for me, they don’t know what I’m doing for them.

Thomas Jefferson is a Satanic school, for it is a "science and technology" school that teaches the infernal theory of evolution and disregards Christ in a time like this when Christ is likely to return soon. This is not a laughing matter; this is the REAL reason to hate the school. We must pray for the Satan-deceived souls that attend it...
Posted by: Kazimierz Jaroszewicz, Sep 24, 2009 05:45:41 PM
Agree that the title is a tasteless, senseless joke. Clearly an apology and explanation are in order from the editor. Anne clearly doesn’t realize that the students at TJ help rather than hurt her chances as they aren’t at their base schools. Most important is that these are young men and women who deserve much credit, along with the teachers, administrators, and families, for creating and sustaining an amazingly wonderful, friendly, creative, and energetic community of learners, inventors, and doers. As with other students, they should be in an environment in which they can flourish...TJ is that environment.

Why You Should Hate This School: Because you can’t get in with that attitude.
It’s not that all of us are all "Oh, we go to THOMAS JEFFERSON!" It’s a humble place. We’re all nerds, alright? If you hate the school, you won’t fit in because every single one of us worked hard to get in, and even harder, stay in. We (for the most part) like it here, and if you hate the school... Get the hell off us (:

People, chill - you can’t hate a magazine because of one mistake. Half of you didn’t read the article. No one should even a damn about a title, it’s just a joke in poor taste, and it happens. The article itself is fine. If people in America just learn stuff by reading the titles in magazines and newspapers, it explains a lot of the ignorance in this country.
Anne, you’re an idiot, to be blunt. The school isn’t hurting your chances. The school takes smart kids, and the smart kids are hurting your chances, obviously, because they’re smart. If there was no TJ, the smart kids would still be hurting your chances. In fact, TJ is HELPING your chances because many colleges don’t want to take too many kids from TJ. And if not, then smart students from base schools in "Morthern" Virginia stand out from their schools more than a TJ kid at TJ anyway.
OWLS, it’s people like you that make people hate our school.
Posted by: Vivaek, Sep 24, 2009 04:58:29 PM
The title... does not coincide with the content of the story at all...
Posted by: somebooooooooody, Sep 24, 2009 04:28:34 PM
I don’t hate TJ, in fact I think it is a great school. But some of the comments by those who go to or support TJ do not reflect well on those authors, and unfortunately by extension, on the school.
Think before you write.
Posted by: Anonymous, Sep 24, 2009 04:24:35 PM
Don’t hate just cuz we’re better than your kids :P
Posted by: OWLS, Sep 24, 2009 04:22:57 PM
The title of this story is ridiculous; so, again, why should this school be hated? Students here don’t lower the acceptance rate for other high schools to colleges. If that student has the brains, they are bound to go there anyway.
TJ pride.
Posted by: Jackie, Sep 24, 2009 03:52:09 PM
Obviously who ever wrote this stuff is just jealous he’s not smart enough to get into a decent highschool. Now all he can do is write crappy articles about his dream school just to make himself feel better.

What kind of sensationalist bullshit is this? Washingtonian can suck my TI-89
Posted by: TJHSST, Sep 24, 2009 03:22:26 PM
It appears that the person who chose this title has a very low IQ because there is no connection between the title and the story. The editor should apologize for such an irresponsible act.
Posted by: John, Sep 24, 2009 03:20:14 PM
Hey! I go to this school. Why should you hate us? We earned our place here
Posted by: Kat, Sep 24, 2009 03:07:10 PM
Well i hate this school simply because it is killing my chances of getting into a good college from Morthern VA... but i dont think thay meant the title to sound so harsh.
Posted by: Anne, Sep 24, 2009 02:56:35 PM
Why would you hate a high school and its students, when they are obviously trying to do something positive?
Garrett Graff, the recently appointed executive editor, should be embarrassed to have stooped this low. Time to show how this approach backfires - cancel your subscriptions and pull advertising.
Posted by: Pull The Ads, Sep 24, 2009 02:30:48 PM
That is just a spectacularly bad title! I will read the article in full and reserve judgement on all the "messages" it may convey until I have, but I simply can’t grasp how that title could be appropriate.
Posted by: Another TJ parent, Sep 24, 2009 02:15:07 PM
I used to be a fan of the Washingtonian, but the titling of this article sinks to the lowest depths of inappropriate and sensationalist journalism. I am afraid I will be canceling my subscription after this issue.
Posted by: Disappointed, Sep 24, 2009 02:11:02 PM
Please fire the editor that thought up this title. That’s not what I expect from Washingtonian.
Posted by: Dave, Sep 24, 2009 01:52:54 PM
How did you come up with such a lovely title?
I have not read the whole article but how does "Success Factory" equate to a place we should hate? Why would we hate a public school that succeeds? The exerpt above is nothing but a glowing review of an excellent school.
Please fire the person who thought up the title and then their boss and finally the editor. They can get a job with the NY Post or some other rag that sells based on sensationalism.
Perhaps the Nov issue should be titled "Why you should cancel your subscription?" and then talk about how good your magazine is...would you ever do that?
I used to think you were a good magazine.
