DC schools chief Clifford Janey buys $1.4-million Kalorama house with embassy-size dining room. Tech mogul Barry Schuler cuts $3-million deal in Great Falls.

IN VIRGINIA: Author and former Navy secretary James H. Webb Jr. bought a contemporary brick-and-cedar rambler on Pinetree Terrace in Falls Church for $944,000. Webb, a Vietnam veteran, served in the Reagan administration and has written six best-selling novels, including Fields of Fire. The five-bedroom house listed for $979,000. It fronts Lake Bancroft and has a pool and gazebo.

Fred F. Fielding, a partner with the DC law firm Wiley, Rein, & Fielding, bought a four-bedroom Colonial on Maddux Lane in McLean for the list price of $1.6 million. Fielding, White House counsel in the Reagan administration and a member of the 9/11 commission, is often speculated to be Bob Woodward's Watergate source known as Deep Throat.

Security executive Chuck Vance and his wife, Cynthia, a former Fox News anchor, bought a seven-bedroom stucco home on Crest Lane in McLean for $2.1 million. Vance, a former Secret Service agent, is president and CEO of Vance International, an Oakton-based security firm. The 21/2-story house has eight full baths, two half baths, and six fireplaces.

Developer Gerald T. Halpin bought a brick condo on Farm Meadow Court in McLean's Evans Farm neighborhood for $1.6 million. Halpin is the president and CEO of West Group, a commercial real-estate development firm based in McLean.

IN DC: Former magazine publisher Bill Regardie and his wife, Renay, sold a brick contemporary on Bancroft Place in DC's Kalorama neighborhood for $2.3 million. The three-bedroom house listed for $2.4 million and has four balconies, an exercise room, and a pool.

Steven K. Neufeld, an orthopedic surgeon at the Anderson Orthopedic Clinic, sold a four-bedroom Wardman-style home on Quebec Street in Cleveland Park for $880,000. The house listed for $825,000.

IN MARYLAND: Real-estate and construction magnate Norman Rales sold a six-bedroom brick Colonial on River Road in Potomac for $2.5 million. The house listed for $2.7 million and sits on a four-acre estate with a pool and tennis court.
