Respecting History Anew

By Ellen Ryan

This new farmhouse with garage/guesthouse and related buildings “give the impression of being built over time,” the jury said. On a large riverside site near Shepherds town, West Virginia, Neumann Lewis Buchanan Architects created a simple front wing of local limestone, a two-story frame wing with double-height porch, and a story-and-a-half kitchen wing. Details inside and out support the owners’ wish to respect local history; flowing spaces within accommodate a growing family and allow generous Potomac views. “Not a McMansion,” the jurors said approvingly. The contractor was Michael F. Taylor of Shepherdstown.
