Personal-injury law is one of the most common fields in which ordinary citizens get involved with the judicial system. These lawyers almost always work on contingency—that is, on a percentage of the recovery—a controversial system that makes the courts accessible to ordinary people but that gives rise to criticism that the lawyers too often make as much money as the injured client.
