The handcrafted Tre Chair is made from sustainable wood and nontoxic stain and glue. Directions East uses a Vietnamese bamboo (tre means bamboo in Vietnamese) so strong that it doesn’t need to use a veneer over plywood, as most bamboo furniture requires. Using this bamboo—which grows 30 feet a year—protects other trees on the verge of extinction. Around $550 at Home Body (715 Eighth St., SE; 202-544-8445; homebodydc.com) or directionseast.com.
