Who Makes How Much: Capital Influence

Here's what Washingtonians get paid for the work they do

Trade associations are a big part of the growth of Washington over the last 30 years. As the power of the national government grew, companies all over the country needed someone to watch out for their interests, and being part of a trade association based in DC was a good way to keep tabs on what the federal government was doing or might do. The number of trade associations here now is in the 3,000 range. Because their job is to represent their members in making public policy, the heads of these associations know their way around politics. This list includes four ex-governors, eight former members of Congress, and at least 16 former White House, federal-agency, and Hill employees. Compensation reported is from available IRS filings, which range from 2007 to 2009.
