Washington has seen a boom in beer bars with the arrival of such places as ChurchKey, Meridian Pint, and Mad Fox Brewing Company. And now DC Brau, the first production brewery in the District since 1956, recently started tapping its first kegs.
It’s the brainchild of DC native Brandon Skall, a former wine-and-spirits importer and restaurant manager. He recruited Olney-bred Jeff Hancock, a friend from their days as electronic-music DJs who also worked as brewmaster at the Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick and at Franklins in Hyattsville.
The first beer out is the Public, an American pale ale that’s on tap at Meridian Pint, Rustico, and other places in DC and Northern Virginia; it’s available in cans at grocery stores including Whole Foods. On the way are Corruption, an India pale ale; Citizen, a fruity, Belgian-style beer; and seasonal ales.
