The New Guard: Lonnie Bunch

Lonnie Bunch

Director, National Museum of African American History and Culture

As the first-ever director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Lonnie Bunch has the challenge of presiding over one of the nation’s most important museums and the last on the Mall.

In addition to overseeing the building’s construction, scheduled to be completed in 2015, Bunch is navigating fundraising efforts, managing the museum’s presence both online and in galleries in the National Museum of American History, and crafting its identity—striking a careful balance between reflecting an often tragic history and offering a resounding message of hope.
