Summer Swimwear: The Big Trends

Ready to hit the pool? We’re here to help you pick a swimsuit that’s sure to make a splash.

Summer swim season is in full swing, even if the cooler-than-usual temps and rain are preventing many Washingtonians from feeling like donning their bikinis and heading to the beach.

Swimwear prices this summer have dropped from sky-high, and designers are showcasing more wearable and figure-flattering one- and two-pieces and an increasing number of mix-and-match styles.

We spoke with Krista Landgraf, swimwear buyer for the local chain South Moon Under, who gave us the scoop on the top trends for this season. Here are the five things you need to know:

•No more tankinis: The two-piece still reigns supreme, but trendsetters are sporting sexy one-piece suits and vintage styles. Triangle tops are the most popular, and bandeau styles are also big sellers.

Baywatch no more: Bikini bottoms are generally meant to be worn “surfer style,” or flat across the hips. Hike up the sides and you’ll risk overexposure.

• Color, color, color: Do away with the black. For the first time ever, Landgraf says, women don’t want black suits. Jewel tones, including yellow, purple, cobalt blue, and metallic silvers have been standout sellers.

• Boho flare: The biggest pattern style this season is the stylized ikat look, and tie-dyes are also big.

• Go from the beach to the street: Look for coverups, such as maxi dresses, that match bathing suits and can double as regular street wear. Not only is it economically friendly, but it saves room in a suitcase, too.

• Show off your best assets in this plunging one-piece. The sea glass decoration keeps the eyes on your best assets—and away from any bulges you'd like to hide. $178, Anthropologie.com.

• Exude confidence in this bright boho-inspired suit from Victoria’s Secret. The pushup top creates a long, lean silhouette that draws attention upward. We love that you can purchase nearly every suit on the site in separates; $18 to $24, Victoriassecret.com.
