The best way to find a hairdresser is to ask someone with hair that you like: Who does your hair?
So we asked men and women we spotted on the street, in the Metro, at parties, in malls. We asked fashionable Washingtonians we know to tell us about their stylists. In all, we heard from several hundred men and women.
What follows is not a list of the area’s best salons—there are many more good stylists about town—but the names we heard repeatedly from happy clients with nice hair. We also looked at the portfolios of many area stylists, to see their other work. Want to nominate your stylist or colorist? Send an e-mail to hair@washingtonian.com. Let us know what you think are the best salons in Maryland—leave your thoughts in the comments here. John Peter formally at Aquaticca in Bethesda is missing - this is the good news for curly girls! I had an AWFUL experience with him last year. I was transfered to him by an experienced stylist I had an appt. with because as she said, John Peter has "curly hair" and knows how to work with my curls. Well nothing could be farther from my experience with him! At first he fawned all over my beautiful curls, said they were a bit damaged and needed a trim. But when I returned the next week for my apt. his own hair had been straightened and he said that he would give me beautiful straight hair like his! I said several times - I DO NOT want stick straight hair and wanted to be able to still also wear it curly - but he totally ignored me as he thinned the lower half of my hair with a sort of point cut - where he took off small pieces and then 3-4 inch pieces! He then blew dry into a huge frizzy mess and then spent an hour flat ironing it stick straight.
His answer to how I could maintain the style was that I would have to wear it straight and could come in each week and he would flat iron it, assuring me it would not damage to my hair! So he destroyed my ability to wear my hair curly because when I let it dry naturally it was curly on top and half way down it fell straight as sticks. I could not get the ends to hold a curl at all even with a curling iron. sleeping in tiny rollers at the ends and using gel and hair spray. I was horrified! So now over a year later his cut has finally grown out and I just began to wear it curly again.
So no great loss that John Peter has disappeared! I have never been so angry, upset and horrified after a cut - maybe except as a curly child!

I recently moved to Baltimore, Md. and want a Beautician who can handle thick, curly and wavy and Bleached hair and at this time can’t get the Keratin Complex Treatment which I am told will definitely help my type hair. I think a one length cut just above the shoulders would be easiest for me as don’t like real short hair . I want a good Stylist for this type hair and not all that I tried for the last 6 months do that great a job on my type hair, and I can’t do it myself. I don’t care to go Downtown Baltimore but will pay any amount for a excellent hair cut and easy for me to take care of and told enough times a one length Bob and in my 60’s is easiest for me to take care of and slightly angeled in front. If cut too short it pops up more. From Rochester, N.Y. and certain Beauticians were excellent for my type hair and I use the Best Products. Being in my 60’s don’t want it too long but again if too short makes it harder for me to care for. Can you suggest a few Good Beauticians that do excellent jobs on my type hair ? I tried plenty of Beauticans and some were okay but also had trouble with Color jobs for Redheads. I would appreciate a answer prefer a Male as used to them however if a Woman is better I don’t care, good for my type hair and color. My hair is thick and Wiry and not that east to blowdry for even some Beauticians. Thanks.

READ THIS THIS WAS AMAZING!!!!!!
I have gone to many salons in the baltimore area and Dc area since i moved from New York. Each one after each one a let down the atmosphere all lame and boring i could fall asleep and i have gone to some that are listed best salons in maryland and have been a JOKE!!!!!! I got a letter in the mail cause i just recently moved to the perry hall area for a free haircut. Which caught my attention right away i was like no way so i looked up the salon on the internet and imediately i was blown away by the site. So i decided what the heck why not try it its free and what have i got to loose. As soon as i called the receptionist was very nice as i asked them are they for real on the free cut and she said yes. She asked me when would i like to come in and i asked for the best in the salon. She said sure i can put you down with the owner she garantee i would not be dissapointed and she said he would be avail in two days mid afternoon cause he was completly booked. Now here is the best part of it as soon as i walked in i felt like i was treated like gold they offer me wine, soda,or coffee etc.... I asked if they charged for it she said no its complimentary then the next thing caught my eye i looked up then down the salon was the MOST AMAZING SALON IN BALTIMORE. I couldnt keep my eyes of the music videos i felt like i was watching MTV back when it was good in the 80’S but in dance versions but modern day videos and up to date. I FELT YOUNG AGAIN!!!!! Everything in the salon was silver and the floors were amazing the ceiling i couldnt explain it just awsome. I waited about five minutes cause the stylist was finishing up with a client and i knew he was really good cause i never seen anyone work with hair like he was. The client in the chair was saying you always make me look beautiful. I enjoyed watching the videos and drinking my wine on time he tooked me to his chair asked me more questions than any other hairdresser has ever asked once i was finished explaining my problems he gave me suggestions and things that would go very well with me. There was three people there and they were all busy. I asked how he was making money giving free haircuts out he said cause we get you hooked on us and that He did. He told me he has only been open for one year and has 7 stylist working for him. The EXPERIENCE WAS THE BEST EVER IT MADE THE SALONS THAT I HAVE PAID A FORTUNE SEEM LIKE A WASTE AND THE PRICES ARE VERY REASONABLE. """I HIGHLY RECOMMEND RUDY AT CHROME SALON""".
VISIT THEM AT WWW.CHROMESALONS.COM YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED. THIS SALON SHOULD BE VOTED BEST SALON IN MARYLAND AND IN DC AND THEY WONT RIP YOU OFF!!!!!!!

"I chose Denise Sharpe @ Eyma Salon & Spa as my wedding-day hair stylist THE MOMENT I got engaged to my fiance. My wedding was planned in eight weeks and throughout the process, Denise was able to rearrange her schedule to allow for two style consultations/trials to test out my ideas. She was supportive and professional for each style and offered her expert opinion.
She came to the hotel where I was staying to work her magic for my wedding day. I loved that I didn’t have to commute anywhere on the day of the event - we all know DC traffic! She totally helped to lessen my anxiety on my big day by being so accommodating and flexible. In addition to my hair, she also styled my Matron of Honor and my cousin’s hair - both of whom she never met before. She was able to get a feel for their hair types and she listened to their style direction on-the-spot before she got started.
In the end, all three of us were super pleased and our hair looked gorgeous! We loved what Denise did for us! Denise was so dependable and I knew my hair was one thing I never had to worry about! I would recommend Denise to any bride and any bridal party!"

To Katie: Victor Roa at Studio 355 Hair & Day Spa is great with Nano Keratin Relaxer. He does the Japanese and Brazilian relaxers. Check out his new salon. The salon is on Rockville Pike in North Bethesda, near the intersection of Montrose Road. I get hair extensions, cut and color, and highlights from him as often as I can. These are the best hair extensions I have ever gotten. No shedding. He has gotta be good...he is known as the Hair Extension Master of the East Coast. From my experience, Victor is meticulous in his work, and you feel like you are getting the most for your money with him. He is a genuinely nice guy too. No hairdresser drama, if you know what I mean. I would not trust my hair to anyone else. Here is the salon number: 301-230-2929. Let me know how it turns out.

I just have to share my wonderful experience I had this weekend for anyone who is in search of a new hairdresser. I was in town visiting my family for the holiday weekend when they took me to Eyma Salon in Bethesda, Md. My kids were sick of me complaining about my bad haircut I have been growing out since February! Yikes , quite honestly I think that they were tired of looking at me, My daughter heard about a curly hair stylist, Denise Sharpe from a friend, She made my appointment for this past Saturday. Yes, I was able to get squeezed in. I just have to say, I left feeling like a million bucks. It wasn’t how much hair she took off but more importantly the styling techniques & products to "wake my curls up" . I highly recommend any one in need of a new stylist to check out DENISE @ EYMA SALON & SPA. I look great, At least that what my daughters keep saying. I can’t wait for my next visit back in town. Thanks Denise. I can’t wait to get back to see my husband. Perfect before the new school year.

I go to Bobbie at THE COLOR ZONE SALON in the Kentlands Gaithersburg. Bobbie is the owner and has been doing my hair for 8 years. She was the first salon in Gaithersburg to do the Keratin by Coppola treatment. She has been doing it for almost 2 years. I love my Coppola treatment. Bobbie also is a colorist and always professional. check her pout.

Can someone recommend a good hair stylist in Baltimore MD, that specializes in curly hair? My 4 yr old has spirally/wavy thick naturally curly hair that I just don’t know how to take care of. Her hair comes down to past her shoulder blades in curls and needs to be properly cut and I need to be told how to properly care for it. I was told you need to find someone that specializes in curly hair, and you shouldn’t go to just any hair salon. Please help me, I’m so desperate to get my daughter’s hair the right trims, products, and care for instructions so if I am damaging her hair in any way I can stop it now!.. Thanks soo much for your suggestions

Nora at Prive always does a fantastic job on my highlights and cut. She takes the time to listen to what I want and then interprets that into what will actually work with my hair. I’ve gone super blonde at times and Nora has always made it look beautiful and classy. I don’t do well at sitting still, but Nora’s really fun to talk to, so the time flies by. I don’t keep track of how much it costs because it’s SO worth it, but I think it’s under $200 to get it all done.

You know hair stylists aren’t just for girls. I’m always struggling with hair I can close a million dollar deal with in Georgetown and still take to an underground club out on H street. While this is easier for women, believe me, it’s quite a challenge for men as it usually ends up as Dow Jones-do or hipster head. About a year I found Salon Prive up in Bethesda and Nora has treated me very well.

Regarding the Oct. 1 query about Keratin Complex by Coppola: I had this natural protein-infusing treatment done at Salon Red in Gaithersburg, MD. http://www.salonred-kentlands.com/ 240.631.0163. I’ve been thrilled with the results. My hair is as smooth and frizz free as Jennifer Aniston’s, and it has been well over a month. I highly recommend the treatment.
Here’s some more info from a press release I just wrote about Salon Red offering this protein-infusing treatment:
Introduced at a New York beauty show less than a year ago, Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola is a formaldehyde-free and safe alternative to chemical hair straightening treatments. With no unpleasant fumes or odors, the gentle therapy relaxes hair’s sub-cuticle layers, leaving hair softer, silkier and shinier for up to five months.
“In an effort to keep our menu up to date with the latest in hair treatments, styles and products, I am proud to be an early adopter of this innovative and extremely effective therapy,” said Morty Modaressi, owner of Salon Red, which he founded in 2000. “Based on my three-plus decades as a stylist, I’m impressed with the dramatic results Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy achieves: It restores health, rejuvenates and deeply conditions a whole range of hair types.”
The treatment involves multiple steps: Following a hair wash with a specially designed shampoo that removes all oils and product residue, the Keratin Complex is applied to the hair. Hair then is blown dry and pressed into small sections using an extremely hot flat iron. For best results, clients are advised not to wash their hair for three days to allow the treatment to take effect. It can be used on color treated hair and works on all textures.
For more information on Salon Red and Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy, contact Christie Hamlin, Salon Red, 240-631-0163 or christie@salonred-kentlands.com.

Mary K:
I dont know how long your hair is and i cant say for the salon, but i can say that my hair is to my sholder and I get blounde highlights and with a haircut and blowdry I pay $115.00 and I leave a 20% tip which brings my total to $138.00 well under $200.000 and that includes everything!!! This is a great salon. Go see Darlene you wont be sorry. Call on Thursday, Friday, Saturday

If anyone is looking for a great salon in white marsh go to Stage I Hair Designs on Philadelphia Road. The owner is on site and has been in business for over 30 years!! The atmosphere is not as great as a day spa, but the work is great and the staff are friendly. If you are not able to set a appointment and you want to just walk in your best day is Saturday. I Have been going there for over 2 years now and there are slight price increases but nothing like several other salons that i have tried. I tried the salon because I needed corective color that Salon by Debbie had messed up. I paid Salon By Debbie $160.00 for my hair and never returned!!! One of my friends told me to try so I went over and was able to speak to the owner Darlene and she said that she would be able to fix the work for $150.00 which was less then what I paid to have it distroyed!! I was a little upset at first because of all the money that Ive put out and worried if it could really be fixed, but as I sat and waited for her to finish with her last customer I was able to see that the rest of the clients comming and going were very happy and they looked great!!! Please give this salon a try. Email me back to let me know what you think.

Does anyone know where I can get the Keratin Complex by Coppola treatment done? MD, DC, or VA salons are all good. I am most concerned with results and experience...less with location and cost.
Thanks in advance!!

I have been going to Zin in Bethesda for over a year now. Uri and Stephanie do my cut and color respectively. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. Quiet and relaxing - and very nice staff.
