The best way to find a hairdresser is to ask someone with hair that you like: Who does your hair?
So we asked men and women we spotted on the street, in the Metro, at parties, in malls. We asked fashionable Washingtonians we know to tell us about their stylists. In all, we heard from several hundred men and women.
What follows is not a list of the area’s best salons—there are many more good stylists about town—but the names we heard repeatedly from happy clients with nice hair. We also looked at the portfolios of many area stylists, to see their other work. Want to nominate your stylist or colorist? Send an e-mail to hair@washingtonian.com. Let us know what you think are the best salons in Maryland—leave your thoughts in the comments here. Regarding the Oct. 1 query about Keratin Complex by Coppola: I had this natural protein-infusing treatment done at Salon Red in Gaithersburg, MD. http://www.salonred-kentlands.com/ 240.631.0163. I’ve been thrilled with the results. My hair is as smooth and frizz free as Jennifer Aniston’s, and it has been well over a month. I highly recommend the treatment.
Here’s some more info from a press release I just wrote about Salon Red offering this protein-infusing treatment:
Introduced at a New York beauty show less than a year ago, Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola is a formaldehyde-free and safe alternative to chemical hair straightening treatments. With no unpleasant fumes or odors, the gentle therapy relaxes hair’s sub-cuticle layers, leaving hair softer, silkier and shinier for up to five months.
“In an effort to keep our menu up to date with the latest in hair treatments, styles and products, I am proud to be an early adopter of this innovative and extremely effective therapy,” said Morty Modaressi, owner of Salon Red, which he founded in 2000. “Based on my three-plus decades as a stylist, I’m impressed with the dramatic results Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy achieves: It restores health, rejuvenates and deeply conditions a whole range of hair types.”
The treatment involves multiple steps: Following a hair wash with a specially designed shampoo that removes all oils and product residue, the Keratin Complex is applied to the hair. Hair then is blown dry and pressed into small sections using an extremely hot flat iron. For best results, clients are advised not to wash their hair for three days to allow the treatment to take effect. It can be used on color treated hair and works on all textures.
For more information on Salon Red and Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy, contact Christie Hamlin, Salon Red, 240-631-0163 or christie@salonred-kentlands.com.

If anyone is looking for a great salon in white marsh go to Stage I Hair Designs on Philadelphia Road. The owner is on site and has been in business for over 30 years!! The atmosphere is not as great as a day spa, but the work is great and the staff are friendly. If you are not able to set a appointment and you want to just walk in your best day is Saturday. I Have been going there for over 2 years now and there are slight price increases but nothing like several other salons that i have tried. I tried the salon because I needed corective color that Salon by Debbie had messed up. I paid Salon By Debbie $160.00 for my hair and never returned!!! One of my friends told me to try so I went over and was able to speak to the owner Darlene and she said that she would be able to fix the work for $150.00 which was less then what I paid to have it distroyed!! I was a little upset at first because of all the money that Ive put out and worried if it could really be fixed, but as I sat and waited for her to finish with her last customer I was able to see that the rest of the clients comming and going were very happy and they looked great!!! Please give this salon a try. Email me back to let me know what you think.

Does anyone know where I can get the Keratin Complex by Coppola treatment done? MD, DC, or VA salons are all good. I am most concerned with results and experience...less with location and cost.
Thanks in advance!!

I have been going to Zin in Bethesda for over a year now. Uri and Stephanie do my cut and color respectively. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. Quiet and relaxing - and very nice staff.
