Movie Night in the City

We love doing things that don’t cost a dime. Thursday nights, catch a free outdoor '80s movie.

Any cinephile will tell you that St. Elmo’s Fire was one of the defining films of the '80s. And anyone who grew up in the DC area will tell you that the fictional St. Elmo’s Bar was based on The Tombs in Georgetown (exterior shots of the bar were that of another Georgetown favorite, Third Edition).

Fact is, we love 80’s films—the cheesier, the better. Well, now you can relive those days every Thursday night this summer with “Best of the 80’s Outdoor Movies” at the Tingey Plaza behind the U.S. DOT. Best of all? Admission is free.

Shows begin at 8:45 and the line-up of films include some of the decade’s heavyweights: Breakfast Club (Jul. 9), E.T. (Jul. 16), Top Gun (Jul. 23), Dirty Dancing (Jul. 30), Big (Aug. 6), Back to the Future (Aug. 13), Ghostbusters (Aug. 20).

Aug. 27 has yet to be announced; we can only hope St. Elmo’s makes it up on the marquee.
