45 Bikes & Hikes: Oak Hill Cemetery

Georgetown To Get Quiet Oak Hill Cemetery

Photograph by Thomas J. Dooley.

Some of DC’s oldest trees shade the elaborate mausoleums and tombstones in this Civil War-era cemetery. Slate paths meander down to Rock Creek through gracious gardens with wrought-iron enclosures and benches that echo the Romantic style of the cemetery chapel designed by James Renwick Jr., architect of the Smithsonian “castle” on the Mall. Search out the many headstones of notables, including Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham, and of the city’s prominent families, recognizable from today’s street and neighborhood names. Open Monday through Friday 9 to 4:30, Sunday 1 to 4. For more information, see
