January 1 through 4: Music and Gaming Festival Gamers should head to the Hilton Mark Center in Alexandria for this year’s MAGFest. The convention features film, music, vendors, discussion panels, and a 10,000-square-foot game room that’s open 24 hours a day. Preregister here for $40.
January 7 through 11: Washington Antiques Show This annual event, hosted this year at the Katzen Arts Center at American University, raises funds for families and children through the nonprofit Thrift Shop Charities. The show brings together more than four antiques dealers who sell everything from furniture to vintage jewelry. This year’s theme is Art & Antiques in Red. Tickets, which are sold at the door, are $15 for a one-day pass, $25 for a three-day pass. Children under 12 are free. Show hours are Thursday through Saturday 11 to 8, Sunday 11 to 5.
January 8 and 9: Discovery Theater presents Rapunzel To celebrate the year of the puppet, the Puppet Company performs the story of Rapunzel at the Smithsonian’s S. Dillon Ripley Center (1100 Jefferson Drive, SW). Puppeteer Eric Brooks makes the Grimms’ fairy tale come alive through an adaptation by Duane T. Bowers. Performances, which are recommended for children ages three to nine, take place at 10:15 AM and 11:30 AM for children ages three to nine. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for kids.
January 11: Choral Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. at this annual concert with performances by soloists, choirs, and instrumentalists at the Kennedy Center. Tickets are $20, and the performance runs just over two hours.
January 20: Presidential Inauguration The next president and vice president of the United States will be sworn in on the Capitol steps. After taking the oath of office, the president will give his inaugural address. Contact your senator or representative to request tickets to the historic ceremony.
January 23 through 25: MetroExpo DC Stamp Show This year’s stamp show will feature a presidential-election theme. Collectors can have old stamps appraised and peruse more than 60 tables full of collections at the Hilton Washington at Dulles Airport. This event is free. Friday noon to 6, Saturday 10 to 6, Sunday 10 to 4.
January 30 through February 1: Sugarloaf Craft Festival in Chantilly Head to the Dulles Expo Center for this juried fine-art and crafts show. More than 300 artists and crafters will be selling everything from blown glass to designer clothing. Tickets are $8; children under 13 free. Friday 10 to 6, Saturday 9 to 6, Sunday 10 to 5.
TBA: Washington Nationals Winter Tour Every year before heading to Florida for spring training, the Nationals baseball team kicks off its upcoming season by reaching to out the local community. In previous years, players have visited hospitals, made school appearances, and held autograph sessions.
TBA: Bethesda-Chevy Chase Restaurant Week Get lunch and dinner deals at dozens of restaurants in Bethesda and Chevy Chase. A two-course lunch ranges from $12 to $20, and three-course dinners are $25 to $35.
