Account Manager
Vanessa Schutz is an account manager at Washingtonian, selling online advertising for Washingtonian.com and print advertising for Washingtonian Bride & Groom. She started with The Washingtonian in February 2008 after leaving her position as a client relations coordinator for USA WEEKEND Magazine in Tysons Corner (and is enjoying her new commute to work much better!)
Vanessa hails from the Youngstown, Ohio area, and is a 2006 alumna of Miami University (Ohio). She graduated with a degree in English-journalism, but quickly found herself in sales and advertising because of her love of forming relationships with other people. Vanessa's interest in living and working in DC increased after doing the eight-week Inside Washington program through Miami. After graduation, she moved here without a job, and started waiting tables to help pay the bills. Though it was scary at first, the decision to move is still one of the best she's made!
More about Vanessa
• Place you'll most likely find me when I'm not at work
Playing an extra curricular sport of some kind (softball, bocce, and kickball, to name a few), attempting to work out at the gym that took me 24 years to actually want to join, and exploring this amazing city with friends. You also might catch me traveling to visit friends and family, although I am not a big fan of flying! I also tend to be in/attend a lot of weddings, which is great research for the job!
• My favorite thing about the DC area
While traffic and congestion were a close second (kidding!), I'd have to say that my favorite things about DC are the sites and rich history. I am still in awe every time I walk by the Washington Monument or catch a glimpse of the Capitol Dome. I hope that feeling never fades! Another big advantage of this area is DC's proximity to other amazing cities like Baltimore, Annapolis, Philadelphia, New York City, etc.
• Hobbies and interests that keep me busy outside the office
The aforementioned extra curricular sports for sure! I also now read for pleasure, which I only started to do after the exhaustion of reading for college courses wore off (turns out the public library offers most of the books you can get at Borders or Barnes & Noble—might as well take advantage of where my tax dollars are going!) I also volunteer at the Washington Humane Society on Georgia Avenue every week. I love dogs, but can't have my own because my landlord doesn't allow it. I'm working to break him down on that, though!
