Daily dispatches on the Washington, DC area's food, restaurant and dining scene.

Announcing the Winner of Burger Brackets!

Read on to find out who triumphed in our month-long March Madness Burger Brackets.

You can get a Burger Brackets-winning burger in this very space.

Well, folks, our month-long adventure of meat madness is over. After leaving the Burger Brackets final open for voting for the past week, it's time to announce the clear winner. . . (can we get a drumroll, please?). . .

EatBar! The Arlingtonian gastropub, pictured above, fought off tough competition from BLT Steak, and eventually emerged the winner with 54% of the vote. Congrats! And many thanks to all the ardent burger fans who voted for their favorites all throughout the competition.

Now that Burger Brackets is over (at least, this installment), we have a few questions for you!

1. How could we have improved this competition for you? What features or ideas would you like to have seen added to the mix?

2. If we do another March Madness-style competition, what kind of food should we feature?

3. Who do you think deserved to win the Burger Brackets?

Leave your thoughts in the comments! And thanks for participating in Burger Brackets. It's been a wild ride.

get to Eat Bar quickly- they will be dropping the burger under the new chef.
having categories with makes sense- comparing the only cooked well done 5 guys to ordering medium rare from Ray’s, Eat Bar, BGR etc is comapring oranges and tangelos.

Posted by: Jeff M, Apr 08, 2009 08:15:44 PM

Wow, people are really lazy... Eat Bar is only a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Clarendon Metro. I would not consider Clarendon BF VA but I live in Virginia Square.

Posted by: Abigail , Apr 08, 2009 08:37:49 AM

I agree with Georgetonian - there is no way I will go that far to try a burger. Washingtonian should not highlight burgers located in BF VA - which BTW, is on some road that doesnt even have a metro. dumb.

Posted by: DCbrat, Apr 08, 2009 08:20:42 AM

Georgetonian, hop on the metro 2 stops to try Eat Bar- it’s worth it. Plus it’s closer to you than a lot of places in DC, so why the hate? Fyi, a lot of us Virginians don’t have cars ;)

Posted by: rozlyn3, Apr 08, 2009 08:05:42 AM

I have followed the burger competition from the beginning. Ray’s Hell burger was robbed. My mission in life is to find the best burger in the country, at least on the east coast , and lately in the metro area. I had tried most of the burger places featured before the competition ever started. A few of them are still on my list to try. I had even eaten at Eatburgers before the burger-off. I will have to try them again. I don’t remember anything special about their burger. But Ray’s Hell Burger, WOW, I LOVE IT! I just wish that they served fries. P.S., the best fries are from good old McDonalds. The best pizza is from Pizza Paradiso. I had authentic pizza in Italy. I hated it! But, if you want authentic Italian pizza, head over to Two Amy’s.

Posted by: Anita, Apr 08, 2009 07:52:06 AM

So Georgetonian, you never cross Key Bridge? For anything ever? So you are stuck in DC! Sad. You are missing out.

Posted by: TrueWashingtonian, Apr 08, 2009 07:15:17 AM

I would like to see fries, sushi, pizza and no chains.

Posted by: ClarendonMate, Apr 08, 2009 07:12:42 AM

I don’t think you can compare Five Guys to a place alike Ray’s Hell Burger or Central. Five Guys should be in a "fast food" category along with Wendys and Burger King. Their $5 burger cannot compare with some of the other places. The price along separates the crowd before anyone tries the burger. I think the brackets are flawed on that alone.

Posted by: Daniel, Apr 08, 2009 07:02:29 AM

How about limiting these things to restaurants that are actually in the District? Folks in Farlington can either jump in the car and take a ride or stick to eating at Chili’s.

The magazine is called "Washingtonian" not "Virginian"

In a world of Proxy servers (ever changing ip addresses)and expanding franchise chains such as elevation burger and five guys, these companies know how to win or stack the votes in a massive way in these things. The same guys behind elevation are the guys behind z-pizza ( hmm wonder how they win best of washington every year, with only a few locations:) these guys have figured out how to beat these systems. Truth be said, the systems have to catch up with technology. Top 3 burger "only" places, hands down as voted on by consumers voting with their feet and wallets 1) Rays, 2) BGR, 3) Good stuff.

You should include an elimination bracket and make it a double elimination tournament so there’s no situation where a favorite gets knocked out too early with no change to come back.

Ditto on the burritos comment.

Lets do this contest with different pizza venues next!

Posted by: Pizza lover, Apr 03, 2009 12:14:42 PM

Hey Washingtonian, how about a follow up feature in your magazine on the final chefs and their hot wives? :)

Posted by: Curious, Apr 03, 2009 12:12:48 PM

I still think Central and Ray’s Hell Burgers are best. I am not a fan of the charred outside of the BLT steak or burger. I will make it to EatBar for a burger in the near future. I have enjoyed everything else I have had there so I can believe they make good burgers. My biggest problem is that burgers which are not even in the same category were competing against one another. I might eat a Five Guys burger if I were starving to death, but mostly I think they are overcooked and dry... not unlike the Elevation burger. I mean really, should the $4 burgers compete with the $10+ burgers!?!? More than that, more people eat $4 burgers than the $10 and $15 burgers so those burgers will be more ’popular.’

Posted by: lavendertigerlily, Apr 03, 2009 12:06:17 PM

I love EatBar’s burger, but I’m really sad that Spider Kelly’s got knocked out of this competition so fast. I think a lot of it is because they’re a new place with fairly limited hours. On the other hand, I don’t want them to become so trendy that I can’t eat there.

The only improvement I’d ask for here is an easier way to view all the previous eliminations, like a master bracket page, rather than having to click through weeks of old blog posts to see how this all started if you weren’t aware of the competition from the beginning.

Compliments on preventing ballot-stuffing (I’m assuming you used IP address tracking, which is not perfect but wors pretty well).

Burritos!

Posted by: indy, Apr 03, 2009 11:45:47 AM

I would think people like Todd Klinman not voice their opinion until after the competition is over. He can turn a vote depending on what he says. We recently see how one sided his mind can sometimes wander. This style of competition deserves "our" voice not the voice of a writer and his followers.

The next competition should be the clash of the 4 star restaurants. A short MM style contest but it could be lively. Also best French Fries...

1. No cheating, nuf said.
2. Fries, wings, steak, pizza or sushi.
3. Eat Bar is my second favor burger in Washington after Ray’s Hellburger, so at least my number 2 won.

Posted by: ktmoomau, Apr 03, 2009 11:36:07 AM

I just hope you guys set up a steak bracket soon so that I can watch BLT go down again, this time to Outback Steakhouse...mate!
