DC’s Well-Heeled Flock to Relish’s Biannual Sale

By McLean Robbins

Want to shop like the celebs—but for a fraction of the cost? We’d suggest scooting over to Relish, the chic Cady’s Alley boutique that began its famed biannual sale today at 10 AM. Earlier this week, Reese Witherspoon perused the merchandise with boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal—and today you can score those same duds for as much as 75 percent off.

Despite the economy, shoppers appeared eager to drop $500-plus on jackets, dresses and skirts—although many commented that the crowds at the event appeared smaller than last summer’s.

The sale, which happens each January and June, features in-season merchandise from names such as Marni, Narciso Rodriguez, Brunello Cucinelli, Dries Van Noten, Junya Watanabe, and more. Starting at 9:30, shoppers from as far away as Vienna waited outside to get discounts.

And deals they were—we spotted numerous bargains, including $1,500 boots for $175, a Jil Sander pantsuit for less than $600, and Superfine denim, once $265, marked down to $50.

By 10 AM, when the doors opened, around ten women were waiting, including longtime DC-based stylist Deb Johns. She admitted to shopping solely for herself today but said that she’d certainly call clients if she spotted anything they’d like.

By 10:15, around 20 women were perusing the merchandise, many heading straight from rack to register—most of the shoppers had already pre-scouted their favorite pieces to streamline the process.

Most of the well-heeled crowd was dressed casually but fashionably, a welcome reminder that Washington women know that wearing designer labels from day to night is not a requirement for appearing stylish.

Shop now—the sale runs till the merchandise is gone, but many of the best deals will be out the door by this afternoon. 3312 Cady’s Alley NW, Georgetown, 202-333-5343; www.relishdc.com.

Some of the best finds spotted:
Collette Dinnigan peasant dress, was $1,050, now $525.
Jill Sander Black cocktail dress, was $995, now $495.
Gold Marni tote, was $1,650, now $825.
Junya Watanabe top, $1,500, now $750
