The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, a 5K run/fitness walk that raises money and honors those who’ve lost the cancer battle, takes place worldwide and counts more than a million participants since 2005. This year’s Maryland run will take place in Hunt Valley on October 18. The Parade of Pink, a walk to celebrate survivors of breast cancer, takes place at 6:45 AM. The Tigerlily Foundation, an organization in Reston that provides advocacy and support for young women affected by breast cancer, will host its first annual gala on October 22. In addition to honoring Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for her work with young women with breast cancer, awards will be presented to breast-cancer survivors. Some of the award presenters include Sarah Frasier of Hot 99.5 FM radio, Julie Parker of ABC 7, Chick Hernandez of Comcast SportsNet, and Beverly Kirk of Channel 8 News. The night’s mistress of ceremony will be Andrea Roane of WUSA 9. The event will be held from 7 to 10 at the Willard InterContinental hotel. Tickets can be purchased here for $150.

A wine-and-cheese reception, in conjunction with a benefit exhibit by Luba Sterlikova, will be held at the International Club of DC on October 22. The Russian artist’s show, “Feminine Essence,” focuses on sensuality and female beauty. The exhibit is dedicated to breast-cancer survivors, including Sterlikova’s younger sister. A silent auction will be held at the event, and proceeds will be donated to a DC team walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York the weekend of October 10. Harley Davidson of Baltimore will host the second annual Heels on Wheels Women Only Ride on October 24. You can register on the Web site or at 9 AM the day of the ride. For any breast-cancer survivors who wish to participate but don’t have a motorcycle, the store set up Bosom Buddies—so that non-drivers can ride with someone else. The ride starts at 11 from the store (8845 Pulaski Hwy.). There’s a $10 participation fee. Proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen foundation and the Amazon Heart Ride for Breast Cancer Survivors.
