Where & When: This Week in Washington Nightlife

Vampire movies, a karaoke contest, free improv workshops and more make up this week in nightlife.

By Catherine Andrews

Monday: Movies at the Cat
The Black Cat is hosting a few movie nights this week, and you can't beat the deals—$5 drink specials with free movie screenings on the backstage. Tonight, you've got $5 Bloody Marys with, appropriately enough, a couple of vampire flicks. Catch Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost Boys. 8:30 PM. Check blackcatdc.com for other screenings this week.

Tuesday: A Karaoke Competition
Head to Sticky Rice on H Street for the preliminary rounds of their annual karaoke contest. For the first three Tuesdays of this month, folks will battle it out on the karaoke stage to make it to the finals of the competition—where they could win prizes like dinner at Sticky Rice, a big bar tab at the Rock 'N Roll Hotel, and more. If you've got  pipes, head over to Sticky Rice at 10 PM.

Wednesday: A Blogger Potluck
The food blog scene in Washington keeps growing and growing, and we couldn't be happier about it. Tonight, meet up with some of the area's food bloggers during a potluck dinner at the Union Row Condos (2125 14th Street, NW). Just cook up your finest dish to share, and show up at 6:30. You can RSVP and read more here.

Thursday: Intro to Improv
Think fast! Washington Improv Theater is holding free “Intro to Improv” workshops this week (and tonight at 7 PM) for those who’d like to test the waters of the improvisational world. The last two hours. As the theater puts it, “Improv helps you get out of those bad situations and into awesome ones.” It also shows you speaking and acting skills for daily life. Register here.

This Friday, Jan 8 @ Rock and Roll Hotel (1353 H Street, NE)

The Method

w/
Higher Hands
Lucid
Moonliscious

The Method’s first show of 2010, who is featured on the cover of the current issue of On Tap Magazine, brings a new sound combining progressive 70s style improv, and dance-trance-techno beats. The non-stop, high energy, danceable set will feature reworked covers by The Beatles, Lady Gaga and Edgar Winter Group with synthesizer-laced originals and multi-part vocal harmonies.

Light show provided by Brett Angstadt (Walther Productions). Tenth Row Inc. with Raffety Productions will be filming show from multiple remote HD and several handheld cameras.

Annapolis-based The Higher Hands, definitely one of the tighest groups in the mid Atlantic scene, recently completed a NE tour with British funk supergroup The New Mastersounds.

All four groups center around tight instrumental playing and jazz-influenced soloing.
