Hit the Mat: Next Saturday Is Free Yoga Day

By Gwendolyn Purdom

Yoga fans know that sometimes getting yourself twisted up in knots is the best way to unwind. Yoga studios and teachers across the country will celebrate the Yoga Alliance’s Yoga Day USA Saturday, January 23, with free (or almost free) workshops and classes. Dust off your downward dog and work on your warrior one at these local spots. Namaste.

DC
Annie Mahon leads an Introduction to Mindfulness class at Circle Yoga (3838 Northampton St., NW; 202-686-1104). Students are invited to pay what they can—or nothing at all—to learn about basic meditation techniques from 2 to 3.

Younger yogis can join in the fun in another class at Circle Yoga (3838 Northampton St., NW; 202-686-1104), Meditation for Teens (12 and up). It covers the basics in sitting meditation, walking meditation, and eating meditation. Pay what you can.

The free Vinyasa Flow class at Spiral Flight Yoga (1826 Wisconsin Ave., NW) focuses on a full range of movement set to music. Dahlia Shaaban leads it from 4:30 to 5:45.

Maryland
Breathing exercises, yoga postures, and relaxation techniques are among the topics at the Yoga to De-Stress class at Thrive Yoga Rockville (1321 B Rockville Pike; 301-294-9642). Susan Bowen teaches about the body’s stress-response system and the relaxation response from 2:30 to 3:30. Free.

Virginia
A morning Vinyasa class at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum (134 N. Royal St., Alexandria) is hosted by AbellaYoga. Suggested donations benefit Soles4Souls. 9:30.

Free yoga is an all-day affair at Balanced Whole: Body, Mind, Spirit (219 W. Beverley St., Suite 203, Staunton; 540-280-3665). Classes including Sunrise Yoga, Power Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, and Prenatal Yoga are held from 8 to 4. The studio is collecting nonperishable food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Thrive Pilates & Yoga (2800 S. Randolph St., Arlington; 703-371-0054) also is teaching a series of free classes. The day starts with Hatha at 9, followed by Vinyasa Flow at 11, Yin & Yang at 1, and Power Yoga at 3. Donations go to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.

The Shirlington Public Library (4200 Campbell Ave., Arlington; 703-598-7630) gets in on the flexible fun with Yoga Para Todos (Yoga for All), a Spanish Hatha-yoga class in the Kripalu tradition. The free class starts at 3.

Classes at East Meets West Yoga Center (144 Church St., Vienna; 703-281-2431) aren’t free on Saturday—they’re $10 plus a nonperishable food item—but it’s still a deal, with offerings such as an 8 AM Kundalini class, 9:30 Vinyasa, and 11:15 Hatha mixed level. Donations benefit the Reston Interfaith Food Bank.

Radiance Yoga (110 King St., Alexandria; 703-535-8282) celebrates with a free Vinyasa flow class at 4. There’s a 20-student limit.
