Monday, August 18: Suzanne Vega Ready for a trip down memory lane? Suzanne Vega, the folky singer/songwriter behind 80s super popular song "Tom's Diner," performs tonight at Birchmere Music Hall. Though Vega has released a number of records over the past years, she'll always be the "d,d, duh, dut, d, d, duh, dut" girl to us. The show starts at 7:30 with Christina Courtin as the opening act. Tickets are $35.
Tuesday, August 19: Navy Band Concert Concerts on the Avenue is a free summertime series featuring performances from the United States Navy Band that runs every Tuesday through Labor Day. Tonight, the Cruisers, a specialty unit of the Navy Band, perform a variety of music, including classic rock and blues tunes, as well as contemporary top 40 hits. Performances are held at the U.S. Memorial Plaza.
Wednesday, August 20: Be a SmartAss! We're probably starting to sound like a scratched record at this point, but we really can't stop raving about trivia nights at Nellie's Sports Bar. SmartAss!, as it's called at the bar, consists of two individual games, each with three rounds of six questions plus a special round. But outsmarting opponents is only half the fun. Between questions, emcees Andy Austin and Josh Housdan provide hilarious commentary, and just wait until you hear some of the team names people come up with. Bonus: A pair of tickets to the September 23 match between the Nationals and Merlins will be given away every Wednesday through Sept. 17.
Thursday, August 2: Brew at the Zoo Who hasn't fantasized about traipsing through the zoo while under the influence of a couple of beers? Stop fantasizing: Brew at the Zoo, a fundraising event benefitting the zoo's elephant conservation program, will feature samples of more than 20 breweries for you to guzzle down. There will also be hors d'oeuvres and live music. Tickets are $55. Heads up: the event is expected to sell out quickly, so plan accordingly.
