Price Check: Williams-Sonoma vs. Sur la Table

We do a price comparison at the two go-to spots for outfitting a kitchen.

Style > Best Bargains Package

Sometimes a good deal is only a block and a half away. In the same strip of shops in Chevy Chase DC sit a Williams-Sonoma and a Sur la Table, both carrying gourmet kitchen items. The two retailers also have locations near each other in Tysons Galleria and Pentagon City. What’s not similar: the prices.

A square cake pan is $15 at Williams-Sonoma; Sur la Table has a comparable pan for $6.95. A six-cup muffin pan at Williams-Sonoma is $18; at Sur la Table, there’s one for $9.95.

Deals extend beyond bakeware. A set of four glasses with an old-fashioned design are $43 at Williams-Sonoma. While Sur la Table’s stylish and stackable bistro glasses aren’t made of Hungarian crystal, they’re just $19.50 for six. Williams-Sonoma’s cheapest paring knife is $13.95; Sur la Table has one for $7.95.

While it’s hard to know if Williams-Sonoma’s higher-priced wares last longer, Sur la Table sometimes has better prices on the same cookware. Williams-Sonoma sells a Le Creuset six-piece set for $549.95. Sur la Table offers it for $495.

For me, it’s SLT all the way. Sur la Table is for people who actually cook, as opposed to people who just want to make their (unused) kitchen LOOK fancy. Sur la Table is willing to take anything back, even if it’s two years old and I don’t have the box or any kind of manual (experience). Every one I’ve been to has been staffed by people who ACTUALLY cook, as opposed to people who don’t know the difference between a pod espresso machine and a drip coffee maker [*cough-W&S-cough*]. SLT’s employees love to talk to you about what you’re making and give you tips and suggestions. I practically have to fight for a hello from the W&S employees and once they DO acknowledge me, they’re snippy. I don’t know. Perhaps I’m not worth their time, because I’m not buying a $600 Mauviel roasting pan. Excuuuuse me. I’ll just stick to buying at SLT, even if it means having to drive another 20 minutes out of my way.

Williams Sonoma stands behind their products, and Sur la Table didn’t for me the only time had a problem. They changed hands too and went downhill in customer service. I saw a blog where Sur la Table employees were complaining about how terribly they were treated too. I will stick with Williams Sonoma! And I have no connection with them other than they treat me better and I prefer their product.

what you’re paying for is all profit. Sur La Table’s employee discount is half of Williams-Sonoma. THAT is what the customer is paying for.
