Ten Under $10

Give your wallet a break this weekend with these ten great activities, all for $10 or less.

By Jason Koebler

1. Phone home with E.T. at the Capitol Riverfront Thursday night as part of its Best of the ’80s Outdoor Movies series. The film, which starts at 8:45, is free, and you can enjoy free Reese’s Pieces, E.T.’s favorite candy, in a show of solidarity with the bike-loving, homesick alien.

2. Enjoy the beautiful weather on Thursday at the Hilton Washington Embassy Row’s rooftop happy hour, which runs from 6:30 to 9:30. Advance admission is $5, and drink specials are available.

3. It’s hard to turn down good free music. This Thursday, Fort Reno features Head-Roc’s Godisheus, trancy Girl Loves Distortion, and mellow art rockers Laughing Man. 7:15 to 9:30.

4. Any day is a great day to check out a museum, but on Thursday the National Air and Space Museum has something special in store. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the lunar landing, the museum is hosting scientific talks about the moon and other lunar activities from 10 to 3. Admission, of course, is free.

5. Rosslyn’s I Love the ’80s Film Festival is competing with the Capitol Riverfront for your nostalgic attention. Catch E.T. on Thursday, and Back to the Future Friday night at dusk. Screenings are free.

6. At Fashion Fights Poverty’s ReUse Fashion Swap on Saturday, you can score some new swag and feel good about yourself to boot. Head to the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel from noon to 5 to donate, exchange, or consign your clothes. Admission is free, but you have to bring goods to swap. RSVP at rsvp@fashionfightspoverty.org.

7. More cosmic celebration Saturday at the Kennedy Center: Two free performances of Space Panorama at 2 and 7:30 will recreate the moon landing using only Andrew Dawson’s hands and a table—no kidding. The performance is accompanied by Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony and dramatic narration. The event is free, but tickets are required. Details are here.

8. This seems to be a nostalgic week—make it a weekend of the ’80s with Right Round Up!, an ’80s alt-pop dance night at the Black Cat. DJ lil’e spins starting at 9:30; cover is $10, which is the cost of, like, three Slinkies.

9. There’s more to pouring a beer than just tilting the glass. Learn all about it Saturday at Belga Café with the Perfect Pour with Stella Artois from 2 to 6. Beers, including pouring instruction, are $5 each.

10. Think you got moves in the pool? Head to the Capitol Skyline Hotel pool at 6 PM on Sunday to watch one of Washington’s only synchronized-swimming competitions. Afterward, head down to the lounge to watch experimental videos presented by Conner Contemporary Art. Admission is free.
