New Comedy Club Brings Laughs to DC

By Delece Smith-Barrow

Riot Act, the new comedy club on 14th Street, is likely to keep reeling in comedy fans after its opening weekend with actor and comedian Christopher “Kid” Reid. Reid, from the old-school hip hop group Kid ‘N Play and movies like House Party 1 and Class Act, took the stage at the new comedy club March 1 through 3. Located in the basement of the cozy jazz club HR-57, Riot Act is conveniently near the many dance clubs, bars, and artistic venues propelling nightlife in the U Street area.

The club has an intimate setting—audience members can watch from folding chairs lining the stage or crowded around small tables just a few feet from the performer. The proximity allows comedians like Reid to get to know audience members on a first-name basis and to give nicknames to those who became targets of his playful, often raunchy, jokes. “Dark and Lovely” was encouraged to talk about her romantic relationships, but the shy audience member usually responded with nothing more than a laugh.

Brick walls and exposed pipes give Riot Act a homey feeling, and the dim lighting from a single candle at each table adds a touch of romance to the ambiance. With HR-57 upstairs and Riot Act downstairs, the setting is ideal for a fun date or a night out with friends.

Very cool! I live right near there so I anticipate frequent visits. I love the BYOB part too. Thanks for the info!
