Ladies Bring the Laughs at the Broad-Minded Comedy Show

From trophy wives to morning breath, the ladies of the Broad-Minded Comedy Show covered it all last Friday night. Andrea Fuller, Aparna Nancherla, Kaite Riffey, Freddi Vernell, Diana Saez, and Erin Jackson brought in the laughs at the Riot Act Comedy Club in DC’s HR-57 club.
The sweltering basement felt like the “inside of a mouth,” according to Saez. But the crowd didn’t seem to notice—some brought bottles of wine while others snacked on appetizers and sipped beer. Fuller introduced the five comedians, each of whom performed a 25-minute piece—everything from a breakup re-enactment to a song-and-dance routine about a gay husband, sung to the tune of “I Will Survive.” The Broad-Minded Comedy Show began about two months ago as part of Riot Act’s Wednesday theme night. John Xereas, owner of Riot Act, says the crowd loved the ladies-night comedy. It produced a sold-out show, so they brought it back with more local comedians. Xereas says that the goal of the all-female comedy show was to end the myth that women aren’t funny. The jokes weren’t just man-bashing quips. Saez talked about the redundancy of online shopping: “Then they ask you what country. I’m buying size-16 chinos, what country do you think it is?” For more information about this summer’s lineup at the Riot Act Comedy Club, visit riotactcomedy.com.
