Where & When: What To Do This Week
By
Catherine Andrews
A magazine reading, pop cabaret, and a great fall happy hour take place this week.
Monday, September 24: Are you as excited about the second-season premiere of Heroes tonight as I am? If you’d like to enjoy the first episode in a social setting, head over to Dr. Dremo’s Taphouse (2001 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington; 703-528-4660), where the show will be screened at the bar. 9 PM.
Tuesday, September 25: Tonight at Velvet Lounge (915 U St., NW; 202-462-3213), Found Magazine is hosting an event to promote its fifth issue. Never heard of Found? It’s a magazine full of, well, found material—everything from lost letters to shopping lists to random bits of paper happened upon by readers. Tonight the magazine’s editor, Davy Rothbart, will read from a selection of notes, while his older brother Peter will perform music based on material in the magazine. $10; 9 PM.
Wednesday, September 26: It’s fall! What better way to celebrate than . . . being able to drink all day at discounted prices? Well, maybe that’s not a specifically fall tradition, but it’s still a fun thing to do. And the place to do it is La Tasca (722 Seventh St., NW; 202-347-9190), which is having an all-day happy hour to celebrate the season. From 11 AM and till closing, you can get $3 glasses of draft beer, sangria, and house wine; $13 pitchers of sangria; $12 bottles of wine; $5 margaritas and cosmos; and select tapas for $2.50.
Thursday, September 27: Take a trip to the Birchmere (3701 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria) to catch one-of-a-kind singer-songwriter Nellie McKay. Her songs are hard to categorize—you might call them something like cabaret-pop—but no matter what you deem them, they’re highly catchy and enjoyable. Tickets available through Ticketmaster. 7:30 PM; $25.
