Sidewalk Style: Sheldon Scott
Welcome to Sidewalk Style, our new feature where we photograph stylish people on the street and ask them about their fashion tips and ideas. This week we stopped Sheldon Scott, manager of Marvin, the newest hotspot in DC’s U Street neighborhood. Sidewalk Style is written by Rachel Cothran of the local street-fashion photography blog ProjectBeltway.com.

Who: Sheldon Scott, 31 General manager, Marvin. He’s also a playwright and actor; he wrote and performed Faggot at this year’s Capital Fringe Festival.
What he’s wearing: Top picture: Slate-gray denim suit (by Corpus) from Redeem in Logan Circle, shirt from Ranger Surplus Army-Navy on Ennalls Avenue in Wheaton, H&M sweater and tie. The “tie clip” is one of the plastic clips that came with his dry cleaning. Picture below: Sisley pants, vintage shirt, H&M sweater, vintage shoes found in LA, and glasses from Meeps in Adams Morgan.
Where he likes to shop: Meeps, the Salvation Army on Georgia Avenue, H&M, and Redeem.
How do you approach style? “You should wear fashion; fashion should never wear you. I’d say that I’m stylishly diverse. Right now I’m inspired by Rollo Larson on Sanford and Son and definitely Marvin Gaye. Everything he did then still resonates. It has longevity.”
Favorite thing on the menu at Marvin? “The shrimp & grits and the frites. We have a lot of great Belgian beer, but I like Bombay Sapphire and pineapple juice.”
You’re heading down to Art Basel Miami Beach soon, right? “Yeah, I’m going down with a couple of friends. I’m looking forward to the weather. I’m excited to see DC representing down there. DC has such a cool contemporary-art scene, and I’m pretty sure Conner Contemporary Art and Meat Market Gallery are gonna be there.”
Rachel says: I love that Sheldon finds cheap, quirky accessories and makes them his personal signature. And I’m loving grayish denim for guys—it’s much more sophisticated than a dark wash.

My boyfriend loves to shop at the Salvation Army on Georgia Avenue. He’s bought some funky pieces from there.

Wash fan,
Thanks for writing in! And good question. I took the photo of Sheldon in the pants-sweater combo when I spotted him while having drinks there. We went outside and that’s when he told me he worked there. I didn’t know him at all - just like pretty much all of the street-style on PB. Since he was busy, I told him I’d catch up with him later to do the interview part. So over this past weekend I dropped by to do the interview and damn, there he was in that ridiculously cool suit. I just had to snap another photo and use both. So two photos won’t normally be the case and they will always be random unless I state otherwise.
Maybe next time it will be you!

how if you are stopping these people on the street do they have an outfit change? love the idea - but I would love to see you stop random people on the street who are great dressers, not just people who are big time players in the DC scene.
