Dates to Do: A Presidential Birthday at Mount Vernon

Maybe you’ve still got to pick up a box of chocolates or hunt for the perfect card, but by this weekend Valentine’s Day will be over and the pressure to come up with a date that includes a horse-drawn carriage and a dozen roses will have passed. Whew. If you’re in the mood for something different, let us take you on a date off the beaten path . . .

To Mount Vernon.

Happy birthday, Mr. President! If you can manage a 9 AM wake-up this weekend, grab your honey and head to Mount Vernon to wish our nation’s first President a happy 276th birthday.

It so happens that George Washington’s favorite breakfast was “hoecakes swimming in butter and honey.” Find out if you agree by trying them along with some cider from 9 AM to noon. Stick around until 1:30 for “America’s smallest hometown parade,” where you can watch—or walk beside—not only George Washington (or rather an impersonator) but also farm animals and Mount Vernon staff dressed in Colonial garb. If you have some downtime between your hoecakes and the parade, check out an exhibit opening this weekend, “Setting the President’s Table: American Presidential China from the Robert L. McNeil, Jr. Collection.”

Afterward, to make your reentry into the 21st century sweeter, swing by Buzz in nearby Alexandria. Warm up with a hot chocolate, a vanilla latte, a “zebra”—half white-chocolate, half regular-chocolate mocha—or one of the bakery’s many other hot drinks.

Date by the digits:
Two adult admissions to Mount Vernon, $26
One hot chocolate ($2.25) and one zebra ($3.25) at Buzz, $5.50

George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens, 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon; 703-780-2000; mountvernon.org.
