Curtain Up: Annual Free Night of Theater Returns

By Jesseka Kadylak   Published Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Always wanted to check out a theater performance but never followed through? Love to see plays but can’t afford tickets? Now is your chance. Take advantage of the Free Night of Theater event, which launches in 120 cities, including Washington, on October 16.

Theatre Communications Group began the Free Night of Theater in 2005 to invite new audiences to enjoy live theater. In its first year, 10,000 tickets were reserved for the program, and this year up to 75,000 will be available across the country, according to the group’s Web site.

Take a peek at some performances:

Bethesda Theatre will open its doors to Altar Boyz, a musical that follows a Christian boy band that travels to New York City to catch its big break.

Forum Theatre’s production of Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? by Caryl Churchill will be on stage at the H Street Playhouse. This DC premiere explores the sexuality of politics—and vice versa.

Fall[en] Angels invites theatergoers to enjoy “art-song and cabaret staged as dance-theater,” a collaboration between the In Series and the Washington Ballet Studio Company at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The In Series blends several forms of live performances by local artists.

Other participating venues include the Folger Theatre, GALA Hispanic Theatre, Arena Stage, and Shakespeare Theatre Company. Get more details and a full list of theaters and shows here. Tickets will be available October 1 for two-seat reservations.
