Daily dispatches on the Washington, DC area's food, restaurant and dining scene.

Video FeedBack: Red Velvet Cupcakery

By Jessica Sidman

Washington’s cupcake scene was already cutthroat with Georgetown Cupcake, Hello Cupcake, and Buzz competing to win over the city’s sweet tooths. Can the new Red Velvet Cupcakery (675 E St., NW; 202-347-7895)—with confections made by former Ceiba/Acadiana/DC Coast pastry chef David Guas—hold its own? This week, we asked dessert lovers what they think of the newest cupcake shop in town. Watch the video below.

Have you been to Red Velvet? How do its cupcakes stack up against others in the city? Let us know in the comments below!

Let me first point out that I don’t typically discriminate against dessert. I have tried the Southern Belle, Birthday Cake, and the Peanut Butter Cup at Red Velvet. All are absolutely delicious. The frosting is as perfect as the cake. I would recommend the signature, Southern Belle creation. I think the price is reasonable, after all you’re in DC and special indulgences should cost a little more, don’t you think? Although Georgetown cupcakes are delicious, I am hooked on the cream cheese frosting on those Southern Belle cupcakes....

The cupcakes are good. However, the establishment lacks in the visual appeal arena. The neon signage for the name is little low budget looking to me. I mean they are selling a decent priced cupcake I would expect the place to be a little more fancy or just a little more decorated. It’s like a hole in the wall that sells high priced cupcakes. It just doesn’t look very inviting. And why couldn’t they make Red Velvet and Tangy Sweet ajoining? The kitchen areas are. I think the setup is not that great.

Too small, not enough frosting. For 3.75, way too much of a cost-cupcake ratio.

-Add frosting

-Make them larger, ala Baked and Wired

-Moister

I live across the way from the shop and have had waaaaay too many cupcakes from this place. For me, I love it, it just depends if you catch them at the end of the batches or not. I have had cupcakes on the dry side from here, but the majority have been moist and tasty...I’m all for Red Velvet and hope they stick around for a while to come!

I completely agree with Beatrice. I have tried every flavor at Red Velvet with the hopes of finding a good one. The cupcakes are dry and are not worth the money. I think the cupcakes I make at home with the Sprinkles mix taste MUCH better. For Red Velvets’ cupcake prices, I would opt for Cake Love!!

Go Beatrice!

Baked & Wired rules the Universe of Cupcakes.

Yup. Baked & Wired is the best, I agree. No contest. I feel like it never gets the recognition it deserves.

Having tried all of the cupcake shops in DC, hands down the best I have had is at Baked and Wired in Georgetown. The cake is moist, the frosting is creamy and delicious and it is big (large enough for two). The strawberry cupcake there has bit of real strawberrys and is my 2nd favorite behind their red velvet cupcake.

I think this is probably the best cupcakes in DC. I don’t know what Nicole’s problem is. Every cupcake I’ve had there is great, moist, and fantastic frosting.

I feel like I can’t trust anyone who complains about a cupcake being too small. Just get a hostess cupcake....cheap and artificial and will fill you up.

What?! Have these people not had real cupcakes?
Seriously? These were the smallest cupcake I had, and I almost couldn’t finish it -- it was that bad.

I got the "Big Kahuna" and asked what it was meant to be. The cashier was like "um.. we’re trying to get on this Obama thing, cause you know, he’s from Hawai’i". (rolls eyes). My family is from hawaii, and this is NOT good. Super dry cake, random pockets of saltiness, and disgusting frosting.

Everyone here says its so good, I was thinking about going back, but then I just realized that they’re just crazy.

I liked Red Velvet Cupcakery - but I’m sad that no one in the video tried the Peanut Butter Cup! That was my favorite. I actually wrote a whole review of them on my blog - I went there on opening day to check out the scene. It’s here if anyone’s interested: http://moderndomestic.wordpress.com/2009/01/28/dc-cupcake-odyssey-red-velvet-cupcakery-keeps-it-classic/
