Video FeedBack: Brabo by Robert Wiedmaier and Brabo Tasting Room

This week, we staked out Brabo by Robert Wiedmaier and Brabo Tasting Room (1600 King St., Alexandria; 703-894-3440), a more casual gathering place next door. Wiedmaier, the chef/restaurateur behind Brasserie Beck and Marcel's and in downtown DC, is serving foie-gras ravioli at the more formal Brabo and flatbreads and mussels at the Tasting Room. Our diners drank plenty of wine, but do they give these Old Town restaurants high-marks? Watch the video to find out.

We heard that the fries are delicous a la Beck, but alas the fryer was our-of-service (last Friday night 3/6). Mussels without fries? That was a dealbreaker for me, and there is virtually nothing on the menu for vegetarians, precious little for pescetarians. The room is uncomfortably crowded, there weren’t enough stools around the communal table (even though there was room for bodies, so clearly there is a shortage) and they let some diner stick his chair in the aisle of a six-top to make it even more impossible to sip $6, 3-ounce "tastes" of wine without getting knocked around. They’ve got some tweaking to do but I’m sure they’ll get it right in coming weeks. Bottom line: go EARLY to secure a seat and call ahead to find out if the fryer is working.

I’ve been to the Tasting Room on two occasions, and I love it. It has the best of Brasserie Beck, (but now in Old Town!), in a fun, casual environment. I love the open kitchen and brick flooring. The mussels and bread are of course delicious. Combine them with the "napa-tizers" and you’ve got a great meal that’s pretty darn affordable too.
