Free Lunch Today at Sweetgreen Until 4 PM

By Elizabeth McNamara   Published Wednesday, April 01, 2009

Sweetgreen opened a new location in DC’s Dupont Circle today, and to celebrate, it’s giving away free lunch until 4 PM. The fast-casual dining place, located just north of the circle at 1518 Connecticut Avenue, Northwest, is bigger than its flagship outpost in Georgetown and is as crisp and clean as its fresh arugula. Lofty, lime-green walls, light-wood shelving, and long picnic-bench-like tables give an outdoorsy feel to the green-certified spot.

Today’s line was long (don’t say we didn’t warn you), but the service was lickity-split. Salads were assembled, tossed, and packaged within minutes; soft spinach wraps were quickly stuffed to the point of bursting; and frozen yogurt was neatly coiled into a cup, topped with berries, and stuck with a spoon.

Some tips: Know the menu so that you can order fast and track the assembly of your meal to ensure you get what you want. Keep an eye on your salad: The line moves so fast that someone else might walk away with it. Also, when trying to open the plastic container, don’t twist the tab as the instructions detail, but pull down to break the packaging seal. (Read: Even the brilliant writers behind The Washingtonian struggled with that one, so don’t feel bad if you did, too.) And, though it smells like lemons, don’t taste the menu. Plant it, and it should sprout wildflowers. After all, Sweetgreen’s priority is sustainability. And how sweet it is.
