Every year, the Maryland chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) recognizes outstanding projects across the state with its design awards. Architect David Jameson took home an honor award, the highest recognition, in the residential, single-family category for this boxy, contemporary house in Bethesda.
Named Jigsaw, the museumlike design makes use of powerful lines and strong shapes. It's more sculptural than warm and cozy and uses aggressive geometry to create contrasts between light and dark and enclosed and open spaces. The jury called the house “spatially elegant” and said it “allows a lot of continuity between the interior and exterior.”

It’s certainly an architectural masterpiece, but would it be a practical place to live? Let’s hope the new residents own supermodern furniture because Grandma’s antique dining-room table is not going to look right in here. And forget being messy—not only would clutter disrupt the pristine interior, but large windows mean neighbors and passers-by could see everything.
What are your thoughts?
