Photos and Video: The iPhone Line in Washington, DC

Videos of line waiters! Photos of the madness! Dramatic stories from the people who waited for three hours and were denied a phone! We've got it all in our coverage of one store's iPhone line.

By David Hicks , Emily Leaman , Kate Nerenberg

We interview folks waiting in line for the iPhone at the L Street AT&T store.

Were you in line for the iPhone? Do you think those waiting in line are crazy? Take our poll, and leave your thoughts or experiences in the comments!

I totally support the line waiters even though I never would. Those folks are the necessary guinea pigs I rely on to unearth, discover, reveal, and expose the flaws in new products so that by the time the brou ha ha is over the bugs are (for the most part) eliminated and I can buy a wonderful product. Stay in line folks. I need you.

I got in line at 7:45. I made a good deal of progress but had to leave empty handed after 5 hours of waiting. I could not afford to take the whole day off work. Several others in line with me were in the same boat. The problem was that the servers kept crashing during activiation. The original iPhone had activation over iTunes which meant you’d go in, buy your phone and leave. The lines a year ago were 3 times as long and I was in and out in an hour and a half. Overall, I am obviously pretty ticked I had to waste 5 hours in line for nothing. I cruised by 2 hours after leaving and the people I was waiting with had only moved about 100 feet. This was at Clarendon’s Apple Store. Big Ups to you if you waited all day. I will have to get one next week sometime...

I was there at 6:30am...I am the tool at the end of the video in the black hat :). It was a fun crowd and a rather pleasant way to spend four and a half hours. One of the gentlemen I was standing in line with had his boss come out to check on him, who then went and bought bottle of water for our entire group while we baked in the sun. Another guy offered to go on a coffee run for us. I got my iPhone, but I also got a little returned faith in the kindness and generosity of everyday people as well. That made the wait totally worth it.

Standing in line is about the camraderie. It is always a gum experience and the iPhone is life-changing. Can’t condone making your intern wait in line, though.

We actually talked to one guy (who didn’t want to be on camera) who had sent his intern to stand in line, but felt guilty about it later, so he’d come down to the line to tell his intern he could leave. There was also a police officer there for "crowd control." We talked to him and he said he had an iPhone, but still thought the people standing in line were crazy :)

I can’t believe those employees who stood in line for their bosses. All in a day’s work for some people, I guess...

I got in line after seeing the midnight Hellboy 2 at around 3:15. The line was already pretty crazy, and I was the second to last person who received theirs today. Worth it? Totally.
