A Night Out: Betsey Johnson Fashion Show at Posh

By Elizabeth McNamara   Published Monday, February 23, 2009

What: “Girlfriends Night Out” Betsey Johnson fashion show.

Where: Posh Restaurant & Supper Club.

When: Wednesday, February 18, 8 PM.

Who: One Wednesday every month, Posh invites “all the single ladies” to come in for dinner and drink specials in an event called Girlfriends Night Out. Sure, there were some couples there, but the crowd was mostly foursomes of Sex and the City look-alikes. Last night, in honor of Fashion Week, Posh teamed up with the Georgetown Betsey Johnson store for a fashion show of its own.

The Collection: Leggy girls with teased hair modeled Betsey Johnson’s spring 2009 and vintage lines, the latter collection giving new play to Betsey getups from 30 years ago. Some dresses were a little too boudoir, but designs like the Betsey Buds cotton/Lycra flare dress ($295) with a sweetheart neckline and rickrack ribbon trim, would be a perfect date dress for a dinner on the Georgetown waterfront. Or throw on the Betsey Rose long dress ($415) while sipping a Tom Collins on a Saturday afternoon at the country club.

Both lines feature strappy or strapless dresses, fitted French bustiers, and tiered, layered, and lacy skirts. There were lots and lots of ruffles and lots and lots of Lycra. And beware: You may even spot some snap tape. Nevertheless, if Betsey Johnson isn’t your fashion icon, you still have to admire how her pieces never fail to inject an extra dose of sass into the step of those who dare to don her designs.

Scene: The lights were dim, and the music was loud. But not too loud. DJ Huck Finn mixed strut-worthy beats by Rihanna, Lady GaGa, Beyoncé, and M.I.A. as well as—of course—Madonna’s “Vogue.” Models took long, hippy strides through the aisles and past dining patrons, while a centered big screen ran runway clips from Chanel and Elie Saab collections.

Come on, vogue. Strike a pose.
