Where & When: Fashion Edition

Book readings, birthday celebrations, and a rainbow connection make up this week’s top picks.

By Betsy Lowther   Published Tuesday, July 08, 2008

Tuesday, July 8: Local author and Washingtonian contributor Cathy Alter will read from her smart, candid new memoir, Up for Renewal: What Magazines Taught Me About Love, Sex, and Starting Over, at the Georgetown Barnes & Noble at 7:30 PM. You’ll see us there in the front row: We loved following Alter’s hilarious, heartwarming journey so much that we frequently laughed out loud while reading the book. Read our recent interview with Alter here.

Thursday, July 10: Just in time to fight a midsummer chlorine-damaged-hair meltdown: To celebrate the arrival of stylist Maurice Clark to its salon family, downtown DC’s one80 Salon is offering free scalp consultations and Phyto deep-conditioning treatments with all appointments for the day. Call 202-363-1870 for an appointment.

Friday, July 11, through Sunday, July 13: Our favorite bargain-finds boutique, Alexandria’s Treat, is turning one! To celebrate, it’s offering an additional 20 percent off its discounted selection of “sample sale” designer goods all weekend—which kind of makes us feel like it’s our birthday, too.

All this week: Is there any place in town not holding an insane sale right now? Here’s one more to check out: the new Chevy Chase Nanette Lepore boutique is in the midst of its first big sale, with 50 percent off all spring and resort wear. Think pink!

Through September 4: We couldn’t be more thrilled about the return of AFI’s 1980s film series if we tried—especially because this week’s flicks include the iconic teen films (and Molly Ringwald fashion classics) The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, both being shown Friday and Saturday nights. (Psst . . . If you’re a Miss Piggy fan—like moi!—AFI’s Muppets retrospective kicks off this Saturday, too.)
