Sidewalk Style: Taste of Terry Cloth
We spotted Caitlin Kottage having brunch at the West End eatery Hudson on Sunday. This online-shopping expert found her (terry cloth!) dress via the online “members only” shopping club Gilt Groupe.

What are you wearing? “I got the dress from this online shopping club called Gilt Groupe. It’s Tibi. I found out about Gilt Groupe from Daily Candy. I’m an obsessive online shopper. The shoes are Bernardo, and the bag is Kate Spade.”
Gilt Groupe is kind of like a sample sale. How much was the dress? “It was $79 with shipping. It was originally $300. My only problem with the site is the return policy. It’s really strict. You can only do store credit, and that’s only for some things. The other thing is that you have to be fast if you want something. You can put something in your cart and five minutes later it’s gone in your size!”
Where else online do you shop? “I like Shopbop.com and Saks.com, but I really love Revolveclothing.com. They have free shipping and returns. Once when I needed to return something for a different size that they were out of, they gave me a coupon in addition to the refund. They will do anything for you. Their models are a little weird, though.”
How would you describe your style? “I love to wear dresses. If I can find an excuse to wear a dress, I will. I don’t really like jeans. My work outfits can be pretty boring, unfortunately, so I wear cool accessories to make it fun.”
Rachel says: I, too, have a membership to Gilt Groupe, and it tempts me all of the time. (Sales this week include Thakoon, Walter, Ralph Lauren Black Label, and the adorable kid’s clothing line Lucy Sykes.) Back to Caitlin’s dress, though: How cute that it’s terry cloth?! It does double-duty as a fun day dress as well as a glam cover-up for the pool or beach. The proportions are good, too—she’s showing her legs, and she’s keeping relatively covered up top.

Unless your style is a la Ann Taylor, you live too far in the suburbs or you brunch with your grandparents at the country club, her dress is not too short. She looks and sounds like she has a fun/playful personality and the dress accentuates those qualities. I think she is cute enough and has enough confident to wear this dress either at the beach or brunch.

People, people--she looks great, it fits her well, she has a tight, athletic frame and very few women can pull off this dress--I’m willing to guess most of you who are criticizing it as "too short" or "not flattering" couldn’t wear it to walk to the mailbox let alone at brunch. And with that thought, if it’s "too short," have you seen some of the thong-exposing clothing people wear? It’s classy but sexy--she’s in her 20s, not 60s.

I think terry cloth should be banned from urban streets! This one is cute, but I keep seeing girls in these Juicy-ish, terry cloth tube dresses walking around downtown, and I don’t think they belong there.

So obvious that someone from gilt wrote that comment by Mary Anne. Give me a break! Placing ads on blogs? You think people are that stupid? Gilt is not that great. I’ve ordered two dresses from them and had to wait forever to receive the one. Ended up having to return them both.

The dress is perfect. The pattern is refreshing and not too short. Her bag and footwear provide bring the entire outfit together.
It is a Sunday people, loosen up. I wish more women would dress like this around here.

Great for the beach or poolside, not so much on the streets.

It’s cute but too short for wearing out in public. It would be better at a pool or beach.

Oh my gosh, I am obsessed with Gilt Groupe!!! I just purchased a gorgeous Thakoon dress for super cheap. They are having a Walter sale at noon today that I cannot wait for. Lucky for you, I have a link that will invite you to become members: http://www.gilt.com/cl
Happy Shopping!!

I think it’s really, really cute, but way too short and casual for brunch in a fancier place like Hudson. Definitely more beach wear.
