Bar Tour: Wisdom

By Alejandro Salinas   Published Thursday, April 09, 2009

Located just a half block from the Potomac Avenue Metro in Southeast DC, Wisdom—a “cocktail parlour,” as the bar’s Web site describes it—is hardly hidden. Yet since opening last October, Wisdom has remained relatively under most people’s radar—until now. At last month’s Artini Competition at the Corcoran, owner and head bartender Erik Holzherr beat out 11 local bartenders, including heavyweights such as PS 7’s Gina Chersevani, Jon Arroyo of Founding Farmers, and the Tabard Inn’s Chantal Tseng. Not too shabby for a rookie with no formal training behind the bar.

Starting at 6 today, Holzherr will be serving his winning cocktail, the Tortoise and the Bare, for half price ($6). Not familiar with Wisdom? We’ve put together a video tour of the bar, complete with Holzherr’s charming commentary. Check back with us next week for an interview with Holzherr and a cocktail demonstration.

I’ve never considered myself a Martini drinker. But after visiting Wisdom and giving the drinks a try, I’m a convert. Erik is a master at his craft and blew me away with the quality and flavor of his martinis.

Easily my favorite bar in DC. Give it a try, I think you too will find that Wisdom is one of the emerging crown jewels in teh DC area.

Erik has created the best bar in DC (and the best drinks too).

Believe me, this bar comes alive at night. The ambient lighting, candlelight everywhere, the reddish tone of brick and wall coverings, the Absinthe and other exotic liquors, and the perfect music level/selection all come together seemlessly to lull you into a great state of relaxation. This place is perfect for meeting people, socializing, and relaxing. Oh, did I mention that the drinks are uniquely delicious.

You might ask what makes me qualified to give Wisdom such high marks? Well...

I’m Ed, the Organizer of BOOZE CLUB. I run BOOZE CLUB in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, and Melbourne, FL and we’re expanding. Needless to say, I’ve seen a ton of bars, but none come close to Wisdom. Try it, I think you’ll agree.
